Filipino to Brazilian Portuguese: singular agreement can still mean we

Filipino says whether the listener is included

NIU distinguishes Filipino kami from tayo: kami excludes the person being addressed, while tayo includes that person. Its outing dialogue uses the distinction to separate a trip already made without the listener from a later proposal that includes them. A Brazilian Portuguese translation needs to preserve those group references even though it does not have to reproduce the same pronoun contrast.

This matters when a message changes from reporting a group’s activity to inviting somebody to join it. If both parts become an undifferentiated we, the listener may appear to have participated in the earlier trip or may fail to recognize the new invitation. The translation should preserve who belongs to each event, rather than assuming that a shared first-person reference always names one unchanged group.

Portuguese nós and a gente use different agreement

Ciberdúvidas illustrates nós vamos ao cinema and a gente vai ao cinema as two constructions referring to going to the cinema. In the latter, a gente takes a third-person singular verb in the standard agreement described by the source. This singular grammatical form does not reduce the people involved to one traveller. It is a property of the target construction.

Consequently, a Filipino plural first-person reference can remain semantically plural even if a Brazilian Portuguese translation uses a gente with a singular verb. Changing that verb to a first-person plural form solely to imitate the source group’s plurality would mix the two target patterns. Conversely, changing the meaning to I because the target verb is singular would misunderstand the expression altogether.

The choice between these Portuguese expressions does not, by itself, reconstruct the Filipino inclusion distinction. Selecting nós for one source form and a gente for the other would not reliably tell a Portuguese reader whether the addressee belongs to the group. The group needs to be recoverable from the conversation or from an explicit description when that distinction carries the message.

The group can change without any change in actual headcount

A previous excursion may involve the speaker and two cousins, while the next involves the speaker, one cousin and the recipient. The number stays the same, but the listener’s membership changes. Filipino can signal that through kami and tayo. A Portuguese translation that preserves only a plural meaning has not necessarily preserved which three people are involved.

For this direction, retain the participants first and select a Portuguese agreement pattern that fits the chosen expression. When the source invites the listener after describing an earlier outing, the target must continue to distinguish the invitation from the report. Standard singular agreement with a gente is compatible with a group, but it is not a hidden equivalent of inclusive or exclusive we. The useful translation leaves the reader knowing which event includes them, while its verb agrees naturally with the Portuguese subject.
