Filipino to Klingon pIqaD: translate ng before choosing its appearance

The same visible letters do not perform the same job

A Filipino caption containing ng cannot be converted into Klingon by replacing those letters with a pIqaD symbol. First translate the relationship expressed by the Filipino sentence. Only after the Klingon wording has been established does selecting its written representation become meaningful. This distinction matters when preparing a fan badge, a prop label or a caption for artwork.

Northern Illinois University’s Tagalog lesson gives ng several grammatical functions. It links a possessed item to an owner, marks a nonfocused object, and marks a nonfocused actor in other constructions. In its example of a teacher giving a book to a student, both the teacher and book have ng before them. They still occupy different roles.

The Klingon Language Institute’s sound guide discusses ng for a different purpose: it represents one Klingon sound, rather than an n followed by a separate g. Recognizing those letters in both languages does not establish a grammatical equivalent. The Filipino marker is not automatically retained as that sound in the translated sentence.

Keep the translation and the character conversion as separate checks

For a fictional equipment label, identify whether the Filipino phrase names an owner, an affected object, or a person performing an action. A label identifying a captain’s equipment should not become a sentence about equipment affecting the captain merely because a marker has been copied. The intended relationship must survive before the display is made decorative.

The Institute’s writing page describes a community mapping from Klingon sounds to the illustrated pIqaD character set. That mapping represents Klingon wording; it does not translate a Filipino noun phrase. Keep the Filipino original and the intended meaning together while preparing a Klingon transcription, then use the transcription to check the character conversion.

The sound guide also distinguishes q from Q and treats the apostrophe as a letter. Its capitalization conventions do not follow ordinary sentence-initial capitalization. Automatic title case, lowercasing, or punctuation cleanup can therefore damage a transcription before it is converted. Preserve the reviewed spelling instead of applying a design program’s usual text cleanup.

Use the final layout to test the correct thing

A useful artwork proof has three separate questions: does the Filipino source mean what the writer intended, does the Klingon wording preserve that meaning, and does the visible pIqaD represent that wording? A convincing answer to the last question does not establish the first two. A recognisable alphabet can still display the wrong message.

When requesting a revision, describe which relationship changed: the owner was mistaken for the actor, an object disappeared, or the displayed spelling differs from the approved transcription. That gives the writer or designer a concrete correction to make. It is more useful than asking for a line to look more Klingon while leaving the Filipino meaning unresolved.
