Filipino to Kinyarwanda: who is shown to whom?

The same object-marker sequence can permit two readings

Van der Wal cites Kinyarwanda Umwáarimú yaabányeeretse with two readings: the teacher showed them to me, or the teacher showed me to them. Both contain the same participants, but the roles are reversed. For Filipino-to-Kinyarwanda translation, retaining every person is not enough; the direction of the showing event also has to remain clear.

The study explains that person and animacy affect the order of Kinyarwanda object markers, rather than their order simply reproducing the thematic roles. Consequently, the marker nearest the stem cannot always be read as an automatic label for recipient. A source message introducing somebody to a group needs more than a check that a first-person element and a plural element both appear in the target verb.

The same discussion contrasts the teacher showing Muhire a cow with a compact form referring to it and him. This demonstrates that a target expression can encode multiple participants without repeating each full noun phrase. Compactness is possible, but its interpretation must still match the Filipino event rather than an alternative arrangement of the same referents.

Filipino focus helps locate the roles, but is not marker order

The Hawaiʻi focus lesson distinguishes actor, object, beneficiary and other roles selected by Filipino verbal constructions. A prominent phrase may therefore identify the person benefiting from an action or the object affected by it. The translator needs those roles to interpret an introduction or showing event before deciding how the Kinyarwanda sentence represents them.

Do not turn that source distinction into a rule that a particular Filipino marker must occupy a fixed position inside the Kinyarwanda verb. The two systems organize participant information differently. The Filipino construction can establish who is presented and who receives the presentation, while Kinyarwanda’s person-sensitive marking follows its own grammatical pattern.

This is particularly important when both non-actor participants are people. If the source says that the writer was introduced to a group, a target reading where the group was introduced to the writer may sound plausible while altering the event. Plausibility alone cannot distinguish these two interpretations. The original assignment of roles supplies the test.

The group’s membership is a separate question

NIU’s Filipino pronoun table distinguishes kami, excluding the addressee, from tayo, including them. The same distinction appears in namin and natin in its NG-series lesson. A group mentioned in a showing or introduction message may therefore include the reader in one source sentence and exclude them in another. The target plural reference must be interpreted as the correct group.

The NG lesson also shows pronouns identifying actors as well as possessors. Thus, a pronoun associated with the writer’s group does not necessarily establish ownership or identify the group as the recipient. A sentence can refer to our people as actors, owners or beneficiaries depending on its construction.

When the Filipino source names an individual and a group, retain three independent facts in the Kinyarwanda interpretation: which group is meant, which participant is presented, and which participant sees or receives that presentation. An ambiguous compact target expression may leave the latter two unresolved unless surrounding wording makes the intended relationship clear.
