Filipino to Hmong Daw: a book and a letter need different classifiers

The classifier can help identify what kind of text is meant

Jaisser’s Hmong classifier study contrasts phau ntawv, book, with tsab ntawv, a letter sent as mail. Keeping ntawv while changing the classifier can therefore change the kind of item being discussed. For a Filipino message asking somebody to read, send or bring a text, the target classifier is part of identifying the object, not a disposable equivalent of a source marker.

This differs from treating Filipino ang as a general word for the. The Hawaiʻi Filipino lesson uses ang with common nouns and with nonpersonal proper nouns, while personal names normally use si. That source distinction does not tell you whether the Hmong object is a bound book or correspondence. The item’s meaning supplies information that a simple marker-to-classifier substitution would miss.

In a reading instruction, the difference is practical: bringing a book and bringing a letter can mean bringing entirely different objects. A Hmong sentence could preserve the action and the intended reader while still identify the wrong material. The classifier contrast is therefore worth checking at the noun phrase itself, before assuming the instruction has been preserved.

Filipino object prominence does not choose the Hmong classifier

The Hawaiʻi focus lesson includes the imperative Isulat mo ang kuwento, in which the story is the selected object and mo identifies the person instructed to write. A source expression’s grammatical prominence tells you something about the Filipino construction. It does not determine the semantic category of every Hmong noun used to describe the finished text.

A story can be discussed as content, whereas a book or a mailed letter identifies a different kind of referent. Do not collapse these into one category merely because all can be written or read. The target noun phrase must correspond to what the source names, while the sentence retains the correct writer, reader or recipient.

The Filipino focus lesson also makes clear that privileged participants can have roles other than actor or object. Thus, a translation involving written material may foreground its beneficiary or location. That does not change a letter into a book, and it does not turn the location into the item being sent. Grammatical role and object type remain separate decisions.

An owner is not necessarily the recipient

NIU’s NG-pronoun lesson illustrates possession with a pronoun after an owned noun, but also uses the same pronoun series for actors. In a message about somebody’s reading material, establish whether a pronoun identifies its owner or the person performing an action. The fact that a person is associated with the item does not settle which relationship the source states.

Jaisser’s data also show classifiers in possessive noun phrases, rather than only in expressions with explicit numbers. A Hmong classifier appearing near an owner should therefore not be mistaken for an added count. The source might identify one familiar text without specifying a numerical quantity at all.

For a Filipino request to pass along another person’s letter, keep three distinctions visible in the interpretation: it is correspondence rather than a book, the owner or sender may differ from the person carrying it, and the intended recipient may be someone else again. A correct reading of the Hmong noun phrase supports those distinctions rather than replacing the source’s participant analysis.
