Filipino to Estonian: completion does not select an object ending by itself

Filipino puts an important contrast into the verb

The University of Hawaiʻi Filipino grammar distinguishes completed, contemplated and incomplete aspects. Its washing paradigm includes naglaba for completed activity and maglalaba for contemplated activity. In Tagalog-based Filipino, such differences help tell whether a household task has happened, remains prospective or is still continuing. Translating a washing update into Estonian requires preserving that status, but there is no single object ending that can simply replace a Filipino aspect affix.

One reason is that ending an activity and exhausting a specified amount are different claims. A person can finish doing some laundry without asserting that every item in the household has been washed. If a Filipino source reports a completed spell of work, an Estonian translation should not manufacture a guarantee about the entire pile. The source verb’s aspect is evidence about the event; the intended quantity remains another part of the meaning.

Estonian combines the event with the object and verb

EKI explains that a total object requires several conditions together, including an affirmative clause, a result-oriented event, a whole or bounded object and a verb permitting that construction. A partitive object is therefore not merely a label for Filipino incomplete aspect. Conversely, identifying a completed source verb does not establish every condition for an Estonian total object.

The EKI command pair osta homseks leib and osta homseks leiba contrasts an agreed bounded quantity of bread with an unspecified amount. Both concern buying for tomorrow, rather than one action already completed and another still running. This is a useful counterexample to translating contemplated Filipino activity with a supposedly unfinished object form automatically. A future purchase may still have a clearly bounded intended quantity.

In a Filipino shopping message, distinguish asking someone to get the agreed loaf from asking them to get some bread. The future or contemplated status of the buying does not settle that distinction. Estonian can express the quantity contrast in object case, so a translation that preserves tomorrow but chooses the wrong object interpretation may change what the shopper is expected to bring.

A finished episode can still take the partitive

EKI separately notes that some verbs use a partitive object even for completed activity; its examples include helping a friend. Thus a Filipino completed predicate describing assistance should not be forced into the Estonian total-object pattern merely because the help has ended. The selected Estonian verb’s requirements matter alongside the source account of the event. A completed appointment and a completed quantity are not interchangeable grammatical instructions.

This gives the direction a practical sequence of meaning decisions: establish the Filipino event’s stage, identify the intended amount or whole, and then respect the construction of the Estonian verb expressing that event. For a laundry update, a buying request and a report of assistance, the same source aspect category can lead to different target object choices. Preserving those differences allows Estonian to retain what was finished, what was requested and what quantity was actually specified.
