Filipino to Bosnian: resolving the person behind a pronoun

Filipino siya does not choose a Bosnian past form

Filipino siya identifies a third-person singular participant without choosing between he and she. Bosnian can require a distinction that the Filipino pronoun leaves open. Alexander’s grammar shows masculine bio je and feminine bila je in the past paradigm of be. These forms do not give a translator permission to infer someone’s gender from their occupation, the subject of the conversation, or a guess about their name.

The issue extends beyond third-person reports. Bosnian past participles also distinguish gender for a singular speaker or addressee. A Filipino first-person message can establish who is speaking without encoding that distinction in ako. When the translation describes a past event, information available from the conversation may matter even though the pronoun itself provides no masculine or feminine clue. A first-person label therefore does not remove the ambiguity encountered in third-person examples.

His or her is not the same question as own or another’s

The NIU NG-pronoun lesson gives niya for his or her and also shows NG pronouns identifying actors in other constructions. Before translating a possessive-looking form, establish its function in the Filipino clause. In its house and car examples, the pronoun identifies an owner; in an event description, a member of the same series can identify who performed the action.

Bosnian adds a separate ownership distinction. Alexander contrasts svoju mačku, the subject’s own cat, with njenu mačku, another woman’s cat, in otherwise parallel sentences about Vida feeding a cat. The contrast is not simply an alternative way of saying female owner. It distinguishes whether the owner is the grammatical subject in that basic clause.

For Filipino-to-Bosnian work, identify the owner and the actor independently. If the source says that someone is caring for an animal belonging to a different person, selecting the subject-oriented possessive would incorrectly merge those participants. Conversely, choosing another person’s possessive for the actor’s own animal would invent a second owner. The gender of the owner and the relationship between owner and subject are two decisions, not one.

A group’s membership can matter after the pronoun changes

Filipino kami excludes the listener, while tayo includes them. NIU demonstrates this distinction through different participant groups within one conversation. Bosnian wording must retain the intended group even where a simple first-person plural expression does not reproduce that contrast by itself. A statement about what the speaker’s colleagues did is not automatically an account of what speaker and listener did together.

Possessives can carry the same boundary: namin marks exclusive our, while natin marks inclusive our. This matters when a message alternates between a team’s property and a shared task. A Bosnian translation that keeps referring to an undifferentiated group may accidentally make the recipient a co-owner or participant. Resolve each group from the Filipino expression at that point in the message; do not let an earlier plural reference settle every later one. The change can be the substance of an invitation rather than a stylistic variation.
