Fijian to Amharic: distinguishing gender, deference, and actual numbers

Fijian third-person reference does not supply a gender choice

In Joseph Hong’s Fijian pronoun survey, the singular subject form e can refer to a male person, a female person, or an inanimate referent. The singular object form koya is similarly not a masculine-versus-feminine pair. An Amharic translation of a Fijian account may therefore need information that the pronoun itself does not express. A reference to one person does not license choosing a male participant merely because no feminine form appears.

Hong separately documents non-singular Fijian forms used respectfully for individuals. Consequently, resolving a reference requires two decisions: how many people are actually involved and how the source presents their social relationship. A respectful form referring to one individual must not become a report about a group. Nor should an ordinary reference to several people automatically acquire the elevated relationship associated with some singular respectful uses.

Amharic familiar singular forms can require gender information

The Foreign Service Institute’s Amharic course distinguishes familiar second-person antə and anči, used for male and female addressees respectively in its grammatical description. Familiar third-person forms also distinguish male and female reference. These target choices are additional grammatical decisions when the Fijian pronoun leaves gender unspecified. Use an identity established elsewhere in the source rather than deriving it from Fijian singular number.

The same course describes a polite second-person form that addresses either gender, alongside a polite third-person form for either he or she. Politeness is thus not simply an alternative spelling of a familiar gendered pronoun. The course also explains that Amharic verb morphology can identify the participant without a separate independent pronoun, whose overt use can add emphasis. Omitting a standalone pronoun does not necessarily remove the target’s person or gender information: it may remain expressed in the verb.

Plural agreement can describe a single respected person

Baye Yimam’s discussion of Ethiopian honorific expressions provides Amharic arrival examples with contrasting agreement. An ordinary reference to Aster uses a feminine singular ending, while a respectful reference to Lady Aster uses a plural ending. Another example uses plural agreement for a genuinely coordinated subject containing two named people. The matching plural morphology therefore does not establish that the situations contain the same number of participants.

For a Fijian report announcing somebody’s arrival, this is a particularly useful comparison. Both languages can employ forms associated with plurality in respectful singular reference, yet the actual person and the social presentation must still be established independently. Preserve a named individual as one individual even when the Amharic verb has the documented honorific plural pattern. Conversely, a report about two arriving people needs its real plurality retained. The article’s specific examples support this grammatical contrast without requiring the translator to import its broader social generalizations into an unrelated message.
