Reading Faroese forms without forcing English word order

A form of be can belong to a completed action

“Hon er horvin” means “She has disappeared”. Translating er automatically as English “is” would miss the construction. Faroese can use vera with participles in completed events involving motion or a change of state. The correct English auxiliary follows the meaning of the complete verb phrase rather than a separate lookup for each word.

In a practical message, establish whether the writer describes an event that has occurred or a current characteristic. An update that someone has left is different from a description of where that person normally lives. Keep any time expression in view while choosing the English tense. Do not generalise the example into a claim that every Faroese verb with er requires “has”.

Number can be clearer than the English word you

“Tú ert” is singular “you are”, whereas “tit eru” addresses more than one person. English uses the same pronoun in both cases, so a translated instruction can become less explicit about its audience. If the distinction affects what people should do, write “both of you”, “everyone”, or the relevant group name where the context warrants it.

For example, a note to a travel group may require each participant to confirm separately. A bare English “you” could leave that unclear even when the Faroese address identifies a plural audience. Preserve the intended instruction without making every plural pronoun sound emphatic. Ordinary English often conveys the audience through a heading or the surrounding sentence instead.

A place name is not a pronunciation exercise

Faroese spelling includes letters that English does not use, and their spoken values are not always obvious from an English reading. When translating an itinerary, retain the actual place name or an established English name. Guessing a new spelling from the sound can make the destination harder to find in a timetable.

The preposition attached to a Faroese settlement name should be interpreted as part of the location expression. It does not require a literal English preposition in every case. English may simply say “in” a town where Faroese follows a different local convention. Translate the relationship between the traveller and the destination, while leaving the identifying name recognisable.

Keep the purpose of a conversational expression

“Eg skilji ikki” is “I do not understand”. In an exchange about directions, that may be a request for a clearer explanation rather than a refusal to cooperate. The next sentence helps establish the tone. Do not add annoyance or disbelief merely because English can use “I don’t understand” rhetorically.

When making an English summary, distinguish what the speaker actually says from what you infer about their reaction. A helpful response can acknowledge the difficulty and repeat the requested information plainly. When translating the message itself, however, retain its direct meaning. This separation is useful with short Faroese replies: unfamiliar grammar should not become a reason to supply an emotion, intention, or criticism that the text does not establish.
