Estonian to Ukrainian: a visit does not necessarily mean a walk

Read which meaning of käima the source uses

Estonian käima can describe walking, but EKSS also gives a visit-and-return meaning explicitly not restricted to movement on foot. Its example Käisime puhkuse ajal Ungaris describes visiting Hungary during a holiday without identifying the means of travel. Translating every instance with a Ukrainian verb for walking would add a transport claim the Estonian writer did not make.

The dictionary also documents regular transport services and other non-walking uses. A train or bus described with käima is not being personified as a pedestrian. First distinguish a person visiting somewhere, a person physically walking, and a service operating on a route. The destination alone cannot decide this: somebody can visit a nearby place by vehicle, while a more distant destination may make a literal walking interpretation implausible. The correct Ukrainian motion construction depends on the actual journey rather than the familiar source headword.

Ukrainian separates means of travel and journey pattern

The Peace Corps Ukrainian handbook contrasts іти and ходити with їхати and їздити: the first pair concerns movement under one’s own power, normally walking, and the latter pair travelling by transport. It separately distinguishes a particular directed journey from repeated movement, movement in different directions, or a trip there and back. These are two choices, not a single division between “go” and “not go.”

For an Estonian holiday account, the handbook’s return-trip pattern is especially useful. Its Учора я ходив у театр describes yesterday’s theatre visit; the construction does not require a habit of going there every day. Conversely, a recurring commute and a journey currently in progress should not be flattened into the same pattern because both can involve an Estonian present-tense verb. Determine whether the message describes the present leg, regular attendance, or a completed visit, and keep the walking-versus-transport distinction separate. These examples demonstrate Ukrainian grammar rather than supplying a verified translation of the Hungary sentence above.

The Estonian place ending follows the source construction

Erelt, Erelt and Ross explain that käima takes a location case, illustrating Ma käin Tartus tööl. The place form therefore does not mean that the source describes somebody remaining motionless in Tartu. It belongs to the Estonian construction for going or attending there. When translating into Ukrainian, preserve the attendance or journey meaning rather than forcing every source location ending into a static target phrase.

The same handbook contrasts leaving a starting point with travelling toward a destination: Laev lahkub Tallinnast and Laev läheb Helsingisse. An Estonian travel update can consequently contain both a source and a goal whose roles are marked differently. Keep those roles distinct when selecting Ukrainian motion wording. A target verb that correctly describes transport cannot repair a reversal of departure point and destination. Reading the lexical sense of käima, the trip pattern, and the place relationships together avoids changing a simple visit into an unsupported claim about walking, repeated travel, or the wrong end of the route.
