Estonian to Tongan: preserve participant roles when the verb comes first

A target sentence need not start with the actor

A Tongan translation can put the verb before the people or things involved in the action. Tamaoka and colleagues’ discussion identifies verb–subject–object as the canonical order of the transitive sentences they examine, while also allowing other grammatical orders. An Estonian reader should not judge the target roles solely by which noun appears first.

Their example “Na’e kai ‘e he fefine ‘a e ika” describes a woman eating fish. The verb comes early, while the woman and fish receive different case markers. The same paper presents a reordered sentence with the same event. This shows why simply preserving the source noun sequence is not a reliable strategy for preserving meaning.

Estonian object case contains information beyond the participant role

The Estonian Language Institute distinguishes partitive objects from total objects. Its pair “poiss sõi putru” and “poiss sõi pudru ära” contrasts eating porridge with eating up the relevant whole. Both identify porridge as the object, but they present the event differently. A Tongan object marker cannot by itself be assumed to encode that entire contrast.

For an original meal report, distinguish who ate, what was eaten and whether the source asserts finishing it. A target sentence can identify the correct eater and food yet still lose the completed-whole interpretation. Map the participant roles first, then preserve the event’s result through appropriate target wording rather than treating the Estonian case ending as merely an object label.

Nominative-looking forms are not automatically subjects

The Institute notes that an Estonian total object may be nominative or genitive. Consequently, a noun’s nominative form does not prove that it is the actor. The source predicate and construction must establish its role. This becomes important when rebuilding a Tongan transitive clause, whose role-marking pattern differs from the Estonian one.

The Tongan account assigns the absolutive marker to an intransitive subject as well as a transitive object, and the ergative marker to a transitive subject. This is a further reason to avoid equating marker names across languages. An Estonian subject is not mechanically equivalent to one target marker in every clause, nor does an Estonian nominative-shaped object become a Tongan actor.

Pronouns need the same role analysis

The Institute’s separate discussion of object exceptions explains that some Estonian personal pronouns use partitive forms where an ordinary total-object noun would have another case. It also distinguishes the behavior of third-person pronouns. A partitive-shaped personal reference should therefore not automatically be interpreted as an incomplete action or a different participant role.

In this direction, compare the source and target as an event with identified participants: actor, affected item and any intended result. Then inspect how the chosen Tongan construction assigns those roles. A rearranged sentence can preserve them perfectly, while a visually similar sequence can reverse them. The goal is an accurate event description, not an imitation of Estonian case shapes or noun positions.
