Estonian to Swahili: negative meaning changes the verb, not just one word

Estonian ei can conceal person information

The Estonian Language Institute’s indicative table gives ei laula as the negative counterpart across persons, while affirmative forms distinguish the person of the singer. In the past, ei laulnud likewise does not supply a separate negative verb form for each person. The intended actor may therefore depend on a pronoun or the surrounding discourse.

Swahili encodes the actor within the negative verbal form. The University of Kansas lesson contrasts Siimbi, Hatuimbi and Hawaimbi for first-person singular, first-person plural and third-person plural negative singing. The Estonian negative form alone cannot determine which target prefix is needed. Recover who is being discussed before constructing the Swahili verb.

Tense matters to the negative construction

Kansas’s negation lesson presents different patterns for present, perfect, past and future. Its first-person examples include Sijasoma Kiswahili for not having read or studied Swahili and Sikusoma Kiswahili for not reading or studying it in the past. This is not achieved by placing one invariant negative word before the affirmative sentence.

A useful comparison for this direction is an original course-progress message. A speaker may report not studying during a particular earlier period, or report the absence of an achieved learning result up to the relevant point. Those are different ways of presenting the event. Choose the target tense construction from the full Estonian temporal meaning, rather than the mere presence of ei.

A compound Estonian tense has several meaningful parts

The Institute’s table distinguishes simple past, present perfect and past perfect. The latter constructions use forms of olema with a participle, while the negative compound forms contain ei ole or ei olnud. Their shared participle should not lead a translator to disregard the auxiliary or treat every negative past-related statement as one target form.

The Kansas tense lesson correspondingly distinguishes Swahili -li- from -me- in affirmative examples. The negation lesson shows different corresponding negative markers. These sources support examining the affirmative–negative relationship within each target tense, not taking a form from one row and applying it throughout the paragraph. The English labels in a beginner table are useful guides, not proof of exact equivalence with every Estonian use.

Present form does not always mean present time in the source

The Estonian tables explicitly allow present forms for an action occurring now or beginning in the future. Swahili’s beginner tense lesson separately illustrates future -ta-. Thus a source message about tomorrow needs its time reference interpreted before a target negative form is selected. An Estonian present-shaped verb can still belong to a future arrangement.

For an original timetable update, distinguish who will not attend tomorrow from who did not attend yesterday and who is not attending at the moment. The source may use the same negative particle across those statements; the Swahili predicates need to retain participant and time distinctions. Checking those two dimensions catches errors that a literal negative-word match would leave invisible.
