Estonian to Slovak: past-tense agreement and polite address

The Estonian person reference may leave gender open

Estonian tema, often shortened to ta, does not by itself distinguish a man from a woman. EKSS illustrates it as an ordinary third-person singular reference. Slovak past-tense wording may nevertheless require that distinction. A short Estonian update about what a colleague wrote can therefore leave a choice unresolved that becomes visible in the target verb.

Do not resolve that choice from the grammatical shape of tema alone. A person identified earlier in the conversation can supply the information; an isolated sentence may not. The same issue extends beyond third-person reports. Estonian verb tables distinguish first-person past forms such as tulin from plural tulime without separate masculine and feminine alternatives. A first-person travel update thus identifies the speaker and time while potentially leaving information unexpressed that the Slovak past form asks the writer to supply.

The past construction identifies more than time

Slovake.eu presents som písal and som písala as first-person singular alternatives. The auxiliary identifies the person, while the participial form distinguishes masculine and feminine agreement. An Estonian writer checking a translation of their own message should consequently examine the participle rather than assume that an appropriate equivalent of “I” guarantees the rest of the construction.

The same teaching paradigm distinguishes third-person písal, písala, and písalo, alongside plural písali. Those are agreement alternatives, not four different dates or four degrees of completion. For an Estonian account of somebody writing, replacing one ending with another to make the word resemble the dictionary form can damage the participant reference. First establish whether the sentence concerns the speaker, an addressee, or somebody being discussed; then keep that person consistent through the Slovak auxiliary and participle. A gender choice appropriate for one quoted speaker may not be appropriate for the narrator outside the quotation.

Courtesy can require plural verbs for one addressee

Estonian teie can address several people or politely address one person. Slovak also uses a polite plural construction, but its internal agreement deserves attention. Mária Stanková’s university teaching text explains that the finite verbal construction remains second-person plural when politely addressing either a man or a woman. A singular recipient therefore does not license changing that construction into an ordinary singular verb.

The accompanying adjective, however, can remain singular and reflect the addressee. Stanková contrasts the fragments boli by ste taký milý and boli by ste taká milá in courteous requests. For an Estonian email beginning with respectful teie, the apparent mixture of plural verb and singular description can therefore be correct. It does not necessarily mean the translator confused one recipient with a group. Keep separate the actual number of recipients, the courtesy convention, and the agreement of the descriptive word. These distinctions explain why copying a casual singular past-tense pattern into a formal request can introduce an error even when the recipient’s gender is known.
