Estonian to Russian: jõudma can report arrival without saying someone was on time
Reaching the station and catching the train differ
A message saying that a traveller reached a station does not automatically confirm that the traveller caught the train. That difference is easy to lose when translating Estonian jõudma into Russian. Before choosing a Russian verb, identify whether the source reports a destination reached, an action completed within available time or somebody’s capacity to perform an action.
The Estonian explanatory dictionary records physical, mental, financial and time-related capability under jõudma, alongside arrival and reaching a state. Its examples include reaching a station and managing a shop visit during a lunch break. The destination example and the limited-time example should not be flattened into the same statement about punctuality.
Gramota’s Russian dictionaries describe успеть in terms of accomplishing something within a time limit, including arriving at a specified time. Their entry for доехать concerns reaching a place through travel by ground transport. These meanings overlap in some journeys, but they answer different questions: was the destination reached, and was the relevant time requirement met?
Preserve what the journey update actually establishes
Imagine a visitor sending an Estonian update after taking a tram to the railway station. The visitor has reached the station but has not yet checked the departure board. A Russian translation that additionally claims success in catching a particular train would supply information the visitor does not possess. Arrival is the confirmed event; the onward connection remains unknown.
If the source says the visitor reached the station before departure and boarded, preserve those extra facts. If it names only the station, avoid treating a successful connection as an implied reward for completing the first journey. This distinction matters to the person waiting at the destination, who may otherwise leave home to meet a passenger on the wrong service.
Travel mode also deserves attention. Доехать is supported by the dictionary’s ground-transport definition, not by an assumption that every arrival involves a vehicle. An Estonian message can leave the method of reaching a place unstated. Use any actual mention of walking, tram travel or another mode rather than selecting a more specific interpretation because it fits a familiar journey.
A task deadline is a different kind of arrival
The same Estonian verb can appear when there is no journey at all. Consider a colleague who could not finish checking a spreadsheet before a meeting. Here the important endpoint is completing the check within the available interval. Interpreting the sentence as failure to reach the office would replace a work-progress explanation with a travel problem.
Keep the unfinished task and the relevant interval together when editing the source message. State whether the colleague completed part of the review, missed the deadline or has not started, if the original supplies that information. A translation should not turn insufficient time into a claim that the colleague lacks the skill to check spreadsheets.
For the railway update, verify destination, travel method and connection separately. For the work update, verify task, completion and deadline separately. This gives a practical way to check jõudma without demanding one Russian equivalent across all its uses: preserve the specific endpoint and the evidence that it was reached, or not reached, in the original message.
