Estonian to Nepali: decide what on is doing before choosing a copula

One Estonian verb covers several sentence functions

Estonian olema appears in descriptions, identity statements, possession, location and compound tenses. Its dictionary entry includes a person’s name, a film’s quality, being at home and having two cars. A Nepali rendering cannot be selected simply by finding the nearest equivalent of is. First determine what the Estonian predicate actually says about its subject or experiencer.

The Nepali textbook Introduction to the Nepali Language distinguishes identifying something from describing its condition. That distinction is useful for Estonian because on can occur in both functions. A sentence that tells a reader what an item is should not automatically receive the same target construction as a sentence describing how that item is today.

A book’s identity and its quality are not the same assertion

The textbook contrasts “यो किताब राम्रो छ” with “यो राम्रो किताब हो”. The former describes the book as good; the latter identifies it as a good book. The adjective participates in a different structure, and the examples use different copulas. These are attested Nepali contrasts, not instructions to replace every Estonian adjective with one fixed target form.

In an original bookshop exchange, a customer may ask whether a particular book is suitable, while a seller may identify which book is being discussed. An Estonian description can contain the same vocabulary about books and quality as an identification. Preserve the assertion being made rather than matching a short sequence of dictionary words. The predicate’s structure changes the reader’s understanding.

Feeling cold does not classify the speaker

The Estonian dictionary gives “Mul on külm” for a personal sensation. Its separate entry for külm also covers cold weather, water and low temperature. That combination shows why the presence of a temperature adjective is insufficient: the translated sentence must identify whether someone feels cold or something itself has a low temperature.

The Nepali textbook describes an experiencer construction with -लाई and illustrates “मलाई ठीक छ” for feeling fine. Its account distinguishes this personal-condition pattern from classifying or identifying an object. The comparison helps a translator notice that Estonian mul is not a nominative I. However, the examples do not authorize treating every Estonian adessive phrase as a Nepali experiencer.

Possession and completed actions require another analysis

The olema entry also documents possession, including a lack of time, and auxiliary use with participles. In the latter function, it can locate an action before another past event. Neither structure is simply an adjective describing a current condition. A target copula selected from an isolated on would miss the contribution of the following noun or participle.

For an original message about a cold apartment, distinguish the room’s temperature, the resident’s sensation and whether repair work has already been completed. Each can involve Estonian olema, yet each asserts something different. The Nepali identity-versus-condition distinction is a starting point for this direction; reading the full Estonian predicate prevents that useful distinction from becoming an automatic replacement rule.
