Estonian to Manipuri: telling an activity from its purpose

The Estonian infinitive does not have one sentence role

The Estonian handbook illustrates the da-infinitive as a subject in Mõtelda on mõnus, where thinking is evaluated, and as an object in Katsu selle peale mitte mõtelda, where somebody is urged not to think about something. The same kind of verbal form can therefore introduce an activity being discussed or an action dependent on another verb. A Manipuri translation must preserve that relationship rather than select a target ending solely from the source label “infinitive.”

This is useful when an Estonian sentence moves between an assessment of studying and an intention to study. In the first, the activity itself is being characterised; in the second, it belongs to somebody’s intention. The handbook additionally documents infinitival predicates with reported-information readings. Consequently, the absence of an ordinary personal ending does not make every such clause a purpose phrase. Identify the source construction before interpreting its target counterpart.

Manipuri also shares forms across different functions

Soibam Rebika Devi analyses Manipuri -pə and -bə in activity nouns, infinitival constructions, and noun modification. Her example ca-bə can occur in a statement evaluating eating, while comparable forms also occur after movement verbs in descriptions of going somewhere to do something. An Estonian statement praising an activity should not acquire a journey or intention simply because a familiar target form also appears in purpose contexts.

The paper distinguishes the sound environments selecting the two suffix variants: -pə follows the specified voiceless stop endings, while -bə occurs elsewhere. It also contrasts cət-pə, going, with cət-tə-bə, not going. The negative component changes both the meaning and the environment before the nominalizing suffix. For Estonian input denying participation, spotting the root for going is thus insufficient to establish that the translation says somebody went. These are attested analytical forms, not instructions to reconstruct current Manipuri script by substituting Latin letters.

A syllable break is not automatically a meaning boundary

Nongmeikapam and colleagues’ morpheme-identification research explicitly separates syllables from morphemes: a syllable is not guaranteed to be an independently meaningful unit. Their Meitei Mayek analysis also distinguishes initial consonant letters, associated vowel signs, and syllable-final forms. Estonian readers who can recognise a source ending should not assume that every similarly visible break in Manipuri isolates an equivalent grammatical ending.

This matters when checking whether an Estonian negative or dependent action survived translation. The target may carry grammatical information in a sequence of attached components whose written syllables do not divide where those components do. The study concerns a particular script-based segmentation system, not an assessment of this translator’s accuracy. Its practical contribution is narrower: evaluate the complete Manipuri construction before deleting an apparent extra fragment or deciding that an Estonian word was omitted because no separate target word aligns with it.
