Estonian to Luxembourgish: distinguish going somewhere from being there

Estonian endings carry information Luxembourgish redistributes

The Estonian room forms tuppa, toas and toast distinguish movement into a room, location inside it and movement out of it. The Estonian Language Institute’s grammar tables present these as different cases of the same noun. Luxembourgish often distributes comparable information across a preposition, an article and the surrounding predicate. Dropping the Estonian ending without rebuilding that relationship can change a destination into a location.

A practical consequence arises in an original workplace message: an instruction to go into a room is different from a statement that work happens there. The destination and the workplace may have the same name. Their shared noun does not justify identical Luxembourgish wording, because the Estonian forms are doing more than naming the place.

The Luxembourgish article helps show the difference

The official LLO lesson illustrates “Du fiers an d’Stad” and “Du schaffs an der Stad”. The first concerns travelling into town; the second concerns working there. These are examples of the destination-versus-position distinction, not a word-for-word translation of the Estonian room forms. Their contrast is useful because the article changes even though the preposition remains an.

LLO teaches a sequence of decisions: choose the preposition, determine whether the construction expresses direction or position, and use the noun’s grammatical gender. In its examples with an, op and bei, direction takes accusative and position takes dative. An Estonian case label alone therefore cannot supply the whole Luxembourgish phrase. The noun and the kind of destination also matter.

People and buildings do not always use the same preposition

The same lesson groups an with buildings, op with administrations and places, and bei with people and companies. These are teaching categories for the illustrated constructions, rather than a claim that every imaginable place fits a single automatic rule. A visit to a professional may be described through the person, while another destination is treated as a building.

For translation from Estonian, first distinguish the spatial relation carried by the ending, then examine how Luxembourgish names that destination. An original appointment reminder could focus on going to a doctor or on entering the clinic building. Those descriptions may refer to the same visit, but the target preposition cannot be selected merely by looking for an English to.

A spatial-looking preposition may instead describe time

LLO’s separate lesson on local and temporal prepositions demonstrates that an can introduce a future interval as well as a spatial destination. It also contrasts spatial and temporal uses of ëm, no, virun and iwwer. Thus a Luxembourgish preposition that looks familiar from location examples may belong to a time expression in the translated sentence.

Keep the Estonian location phrase and any appointment time analytically separate. A message can contain both a movement into a place and an event scheduled after an interval; each relationship needs its own target construction. Checking only whether the expected place name survives would miss errors in both the destination article and the timing.
