Estonian to Kannada: knowing a language can be expressed with the verb for coming

Read the skill before interpreting the verb

A visitor asking about an interpreter needs to establish what another person can understand, rather than when someone will arrive. This distinction matters when an Estonian message about language ability becomes Kannada: a verb whose dictionary meaning involves movement can belong to an ordinary expression of knowing a language. Rejecting it simply because it resembles come would misread the construction.

Eesti Keele Instituut gives learned competence as one meaning of oskama. Its examples include knowing French and English, sewing, swimming and playing tennis. The entry also records broader uses involving capability or managing a response. Identify the particular activity in your message before treating every occurrence as a claim about a qualification.

Zydenbos explains that Kannada baru, come, commonly expresses knowing or mastering a language, game or instrument. His question nimage kannaḍa baruttā? asks whether the addressee speaks Kannada. It is not an inquiry about Kannada arriving at a destination. Here the named language supplies essential evidence for the idiomatic reading.

Separate a skill claim from a service commitment

Imagine an Estonian organiser preparing a bilingual workshop. One participant knows English, another can explain the equipment in Estonian, and a third has agreed to interpret the opening session. Those are three different pieces of information. A translation that turns the first participant’s language ability into a promise to interpret assigns work that the person never accepted.

Write the ability statement separately from the arrangement: describe which language the participant knows, then identify who has agreed to interpret and for which session. This is an editorial way to preserve responsibilities, rather than a requirement to avoid natural Kannada idioms. The result should still allow a reader to distinguish competence from an actual assignment.

The same problem arises with an instrument demonstration. The manual illustrates the idiom through knowing how to play the flute. A musician’s ability does not establish that a flute is available at the venue, that the musician has brought one, or that a performance has been scheduled. Keep those logistical facts explicit if they affect the invitation.

Check what the reply actually confirms

For a visitor enquiry, state the task behind the language question. Someone may need directions read aloud, a short conversation interpreted or a written application explained. These are proposed situations, not additional meanings automatically carried by the Kannada verb. Naming the task prevents the recipient from having to infer the intended help from a general question about language knowledge.

Zydenbos also notes colloquial shortening in this expression. A shorter spoken form is therefore not sufficient evidence that a translation has dropped the ability meaning. Judge the whole question and the language or skill it names; do not compare only the length of the verb against a more formal example.

Before sending the workshop message, check who possesses the skill, which language is involved and whether the next sentence requests help or records an agreement. A successful translation preserves those distinctions even when the two languages organise the expression differently. A reply confirming language knowledge should not silently become confirmation of attendance, equipment or interpreting duties.
