Estonian to Hmong Daw: maja changes its endings while a Hmong noun phrase changes its structure

Estonian forms identify one house or several houses

The Estonian Language Institute lists maja for a building where people live or work and gives plural forms including majad and maju. Its examples describe a house by the sea and a company moving into a new building. A Hmong Daw translation needs the intended building and number, but should not treat the Estonian ending as something to append to a target noun.

Compare suur maja with suured majad. The first describes one large house; the second describes several large houses. Estonian changes the adjective and noun together. When translating a property description, losing that agreement-based number information can turn a single building into a group or a group into one building, even if the adjective’s meaning remains recognizable.

A classifier belongs inside the Hmong house phrase

Hmong for Beginners gives lub tsev for a house, tsib lub tsev for five houses and lub tsev loj for a large house. These examples organize the numeral, classifier, noun and descriptive word through their positions. The property description therefore cannot be translated by preserving Estonian adjective-before-noun order and transferring its endings.

The same teaching material gives lub tsev no for this house and kuv lub tsev for my house. A demonstrative follows the house phrase, while the possessor precedes it. Estonian see maja and minu maja both put the relevant element before maja, but the corresponding Hmong examples do not place demonstrative and possessor in identical positions.

This matters when distinguishing the building being offered from another building already discussed. Estonian see can identify the currently indicated house; a possessive identifies its relationship to somebody. The Hmong phrase needs the intended kind of reference rather than an interchangeable extra word attached wherever the Estonian original places it.

Plural reference is not just another unit classifier

The textbook explains cov as a general group classifier used for plural reference. In the ordinary house examples, it replaces the singular unit classifier rather than stacking with it. Thus translating majad does not mean taking the complete singular phrase and simply adding a plural element while retaining every existing component.

An exact count and an unspecified plurality are different source claims. Viis maja supplies five buildings, whereas majad alone need not give a count. The attested Hmong five-house phrase shows how an exact numeral combines with its classifier. Replacing an uncounted group with five houses would invent a quantity that an Estonian plural ending never supplied.

For an Estonian building description, preserve whether the source names one house, an exact number, an indicated house or somebody’s house. Then organize the Hmong Daw phrase using the appropriate numeral, classifier, possessive or demonstrative relationship. The dictionary’s additional institutional sense of maja also means the physical house example should not automatically replace the name of an institution merely because the Estonian name contains maja.
