Estonian to Assamese: teie isa may refer to one addressee’s father

Polite address does not necessarily identify several people

Estonian teie can address a group, but it can also address one person politely. The Estonian Language Institute explicitly records both uses, including the frequent capital letter in written polite address. Therefore teie isa does not automatically identify the father of several addressees. An Assamese rendering must establish the actual person or group being addressed.

Compare Sinu isa tuli with Teie isa tuli in a letter to one adult receiving a personal invitation. Both can concern one father, while the address relationship changes. A translation that makes the second sentence address a group merely because teie is historically plural would misrepresent the letter’s audience.

Assamese kinship expressions can reflect the addressee relationship

Samhita Bharadwaj’s field-based study of standard Assamese as spoken in Sivasagar describes different second-person pronouns and agreement according to honorificity. It also examines kinship possessive forms. The article gives tomar deutara for a neutral your father expression and aponar deutak for a formal one.

These attested expressions illustrate why the choice need not stop at translating the Estonian possessive pronoun. The kinship noun can participate in the person-related pattern too. The study also notes that the personal affixes are optional, so its examples should not be turned into a demand that every Assamese sentence must contain the same suffix.

In a message to a familiar friend, sinu can support a different interpersonal reading from polite Teie in a formal enquiry. Assamese has distinctions that do not simply reproduce Estonian spelling or capitalisation. The target expression should fit the established relationship rather than mechanically convert a capital letter into a number change.

Keep family relationships distinct from the people being addressed

Teie isad, when addressing several people about their fathers, changes the number of fathers as well as potentially the number of addressees. Teie isa in a polite singular letter does neither. A translator needs to keep these two counts separate instead of treating every plural-looking source element as a cue to multiply the same participant.

The study’s second-person imperative examples also distinguish address levels while sharing forms between singular and corresponding plural pronouns. This cautions against inferring the number of addressees solely from an Assamese verb ending. The explicit Estonian participants and the surrounding letter or conversation remain relevant.

Finally, Minu isa ütles teie isale describes a father speaking to another father; the possessives identify whose relative each is. Replacing the second relationship with the listener directly would turn a family-to-family exchange into a direct conversation with the addressee. In Assamese, preserving the two fathers and selecting an appropriate possessive address relationship communicates both the event and the social reference, without inventing a family member’s name or turning polite singular Estonian into a shared group relationship.
