English to Zulu: a greeting depends on who arrives and who leaves

A Zulu greeting is more than an English time label

English often changes its greeting according to morning, afternoon, or evening. UNISA’s Zulu course explains that the greeting itself remains the same through the day. It also emphasizes the accompanying inquiry about well-being. An English good morning should therefore be translated as part of a greeting exchange rather than treated as a literal combination of good and a time noun.

The course pairs Sawubona with greeting someone and Unjani? with asking about their well-being. In a message to a new contact, decide whether you are opening a conversation or merely labeling an event as morning. The social function guides the wording; a calendar label and a courteous opening are different translation tasks.

Farewell depends on who remains

English goodbye can be used by the person leaving and the person staying. Zulu distinguishes that situation: Hamba kahle addresses someone going, while Sala kahle addresses someone remaining. Before translating a farewell in a chat or caption, identify which participant is leaving.

A sentence intended for someone setting off on a journey should not accidentally wish them well as the person staying behind. If you adapt a translated farewell for the opposite side of the conversation, regenerate the phrase rather than assuming goodbye has one context-free equivalent. The direction of departure is part of what the Zulu wording communicates.

Plural form can signal courtesy as well as number

UNISA notes that plural forms in greeting can address one person respectfully or extend the inquiry to family members. An English singular you does not necessarily rule out such a form. Avoid treating every plural-looking target as a counting error before considering how the greeting is being used.

For a group message, however, actual number still matters. State whether the English source addresses one visitor, several guests, or a family, and keep the greeting attached to its intended audience. The same practical situation should determine both the wording and the farewell, rather than switching forms independently because they sound familiar.

A respectful address need not assert kinship

The course describes family-related address terms used according to relative age, including forms corresponding to father, mother, sister, or brother. In an English-to-Zulu introduction, a respectful address can therefore be appropriate even when no biological relationship exists. Do not interpret the target term through English family labels alone.

For a final review, imagine the full encounter: who arrives, whom they greet, how many people are addressed, and who departs. These questions expose errors that a single English word like hello or goodbye leaves hidden. Keep the context with a saved phrase, especially if you plan to speak it, so a courteous expression remains suitable when reused.
