English to Xhosa: preserve noun class, movement and who benefits
Changing person to people changes the surrounding sentence
IsiXhosa umntu, a person, and abantu, people, show a singular-plural distinction through noun-class prefixes. Other elements agree with the noun’s class. Translating an English sentence therefore requires more than replacing person with a new noun and leaving every surrounding word untouched.
If you edit a translated notice from one attendee to several attendees, translate the revised sentence rather than changing only the noun manually. A number, descriptive expression, or verb agreement may also need adjustment. This is a practical difference from English editing, where much of a sentence can remain unchanged after replacing one singular noun with a plural.
Tell the translator whether someone arrives or leaves
English uses at, to, and from to distinguish location and movement. IsiXhosa can use a locative form whose interpretation depends on the accompanying verb. Esikolweni relates to a school location, but the complete construction must establish whether someone is there, going there, or coming from there.
Write I am coming from school if that is the intended journey, rather than a compressed message such as me school. Equally, keep I am at school separate from I am going to school. This supplies the motion or state needed for the target construction. In a pickup arrangement, the destination and starting point are essential parts of the message, even if the place name itself is perfectly recognizable.
English gender distinctions may become a shared pronoun
English he and she can both correspond to isiXhosa yena when referring to a person. The shared target pronoun does not by itself mean that the translator has confused a man and a woman. IsiXhosa noun-class agreement should not be treated as an English masculine-feminine agreement system.
However, a sentence sequence that uses he for one person and she for another can become harder to follow when both references converge. Repeat a name at the point where the responsible person changes. This is particularly useful in a handover instruction: the recipient should know whether the teacher, parent, or driver will perform the next action without having to infer it from English gender distinctions that the target does not reproduce.
For and each other can affect the verb itself
English Buy food and Buy food for the children specify different participant relationships. IsiXhosa has verbal extensions that can incorporate relationships such as acting for someone, acting reciprocally, or being affected passively. Preserve those small English expressions in the input; they are not dispensable decoration around the main verb.
Likewise, They helped each other should retain the reciprocal meaning rather than become a statement that they helped an unspecified third person. Check the target as a whole construction rather than searching for a separate word matching each. An English preposition or reciprocal phrase may be expressed within an isiXhosa verb, so absence of a visibly separate equivalent is not sufficient evidence that its meaning was omitted.
