English to Ukrainian: address people directly and preserve the action’s result

A greeting changes the form of the name

Ukrainian uses a productive vocative case for direct address. A person called Олена can be addressed as “Олено,” in a greeting. English generally leaves a name unchanged, so the source spelling alone does not show this target-language choice. Identify whether the sentence speaks to the person or merely mentions them before selecting the form.

Titles and patronymics can also require vocative treatment in an appropriate address. Do not manufacture a patronymic or an official name component that the source does not provide. Preserve the base official name in identity fields while using the grammatically suitable form in the running greeting. These are different functions of the same name.

English past tense can conceal both aspect and gender

Ukrainian distinguishes imperfective and perfective ways of presenting actions. “I was writing a letter” can be “Я писав листа” for a male speaker or “Я писала листа” for a female speaker. A statement emphasizing the finished result can instead use написав or написала. A deadline update must preserve whether the letter is being worked on or is ready.

English does not encode that speaker-gender distinction in I wrote. Ask which person the reusable message represents or choose a faithful formulation that avoids an unsupported assumption. Aspect is not a simple past-versus-present switch either: repeated activity, an ongoing process, and a completed whole need different interpretation even when English uses the same basic verb.

Keep Ukrainian vocabulary and letters throughout

Ukrainian uses Cyrillic, but sharing a script with another language does not make the words interchangeable. Preserve Ukrainian і, ї, є, and ґ where required and avoid replacing them with similar-looking letters from another alphabet. A visually plausible mixed-script word can be difficult to search and may not be correctly spelled in either language.

“Thank you for your help” can be “Дякую за допомогу.” Use a natural Ukrainian expression rather than translating through a neighboring language and changing a few letters afterward. In names and official identifiers, retain the person’s supplied spelling or an established official transliteration rather than inventing one from appearance.

You and be require whole-sentence choices

English you may call for familiar singular ти or plural/polite ви. Establish the actual relationship and number, then keep verbs and possessives consistent. A note to several friends is not the same address situation as a first email to one unfamiliar customer, even if both use one English pronoun.

Ukrainian can omit an ordinary present copula in many descriptions, while English normally includes am, is, or are. Do not insert a dictionary equivalent of be everywhere. Translate the actual identity, location, or condition construction. Preserve explicit time information when the message moves into past or future rather than extending a present-tense omission pattern to every sentence.

English: translation notes

English words such as “bank” and “right” have several meanings. Add a full sentence to help resolve them. English “you” does not distinguish formal address or singular from plural; specify the audience when reviewing the result.

Ukrainian: translation notes

Ukrainian and Russian are distinct languages. Select Ukrainian for Ukrainian text and preserve letters such as ї, є, and ґ. Confirm the spelling of names and places.
