Giving English greetings and introductions the Tigrinya forms they need

English you hides choices that Tigrinya expresses

An English greeting can leave the addressee’s gender unstated. In Tigrinya, common address forms distinguish it. A morning greeting to one man can be “ከመይ ሓዲርካ”, while the corresponding greeting to one woman is “ከመይ ሓዲርኪ”. The English purpose is “Good morning”, but the endings differ with the person addressed.

When preparing a personalised welcome, identify its recipient before reusing an existing translation. A greeting saved for one person may not fit another simply because both English sources say “you”. For a message to a group, number and the appropriate address form also matter. Let that information guide the translation rather than editing an unfamiliar ending by eye.

A greeting is not always an inquiry about an event

The morning expressions refer to how someone has spent the night, but their ordinary role is a greeting. Translating the English opening is therefore about choosing an expression appropriate to the occasion, not constructing a literal equivalent of each English word. For an all-day website welcome, a time-specific expression may be inappropriate.

“Hello” can be “ሰላም”. This gives an English speaker a short general opening without specifying a morning encounter. It does not remove the need to make later address forms appropriate to the reader. If the rest of the message asks a question directly, the grammatical choices reappear even after a broadly usable greeting.

A profession or student label needs a full sentence

“I am a student” can be “ኣነ ተመሃራይ ኢየ” for a male speaker. The student noun has a gendered counterpart, and the expression for “am” belongs to the sentence rather than being an optional decoration. Do not reuse this exact wording for every English speaker without checking the relevant form.

English profession words often conceal distinctions that can appear elsewhere in Tigrinya grammar. A noun itself may serve for male and female referents while agreement identifies the person. Provide enough information about the speaker or subject to support the intended sentence. At the same time, avoid inferring gender from a profession when the English source does not establish it.

An English question should remain a question

English often changes the position of “is” or “are” when asking a question. Tigrinya can use question intonation without the same word-order inversion and also has interrogative copula forms. Do not rearrange the translated words into an English-looking sequence merely because the source begins with an auxiliary.

For written text, retain the question punctuation and the complete predicate. A phrase used to identify a student is not automatically the right form for asking whether someone is a student. Keep that difference visible when saving introductions and questions side by side. For spoken delivery, the intonation is part of the intended act; reading a statement with an improvised English question rhythm is not a reliable substitute for hearing the Tigrinya expression in use.
