English to Russian: choose the action’s viewpoint before the verb ending
Writing a report is not the same message as finishing it
Russian aspect distinguishes ways of presenting an action that English may leave to tense or surrounding words. “I was writing a letter” can be “Я писал письмо” for a male speaker or “Я писала письмо” for a female speaker. A statement emphasizing the letter as a completed result can instead use написал or написала. Do not select aspect merely from the fact that the English verb is past tense.
The speaker’s gender is another choice English did not encode. A reusable English message about a completed action may need different Russian past forms for different speakers. Obtain that information or use a faithful alternative that does not invent it. Keep the same referent and agreement through the paragraph.
You needs a number and a relationship
English you can become familiar singular ты, plural вы, or polite singular вы. That decision affects the verb and related pronouns. In a polite exchange, “Could you send the address?” can be “Не могли бы вы прислать адрес?” The negative-shaped Russian question is still a courteous positive request, not a request to withhold the address.
Capitalized Вы is used in certain written address conventions for one recipient; it is not a universal upgrade for every occurrence of plural you. Follow the type of correspondence and remain consistent. A group instruction should not be mistaken for a personal letter to one specially addressed person.
Do not supply an unnecessary present-tense be
Russian often omits a present-tense copula in ordinary statements of identity or description. “I am at home” is “Я дома.” A dictionary equivalent of English am does not have to be inserted between every Russian subject and description. Past and future time use different constructions, so omission is not a rule for all tenses.
Possession also commonly uses a construction such as у меня есть rather than a direct English subject–have–object frame. Translate the relationship as a whole. A sentence about having an item, a description of its condition, and an expression of an experience may require different Russian patterns despite sharing have or be in English.
Motion and names should keep the facts intact
Russian motion verbs can distinguish walking from travelling by vehicle and a particular journey from repeated or multidirectional movement. English go often leaves these facts unstated. Do not select a more specific journey simply because one dictionary entry appears first. Use the time expression and actual means of travel when the source supplies them.
Preserve official names and addresses rather than respelling them from memory. Cyrillic output should remain consistently Russian, with the target’s actual vocabulary and spelling. Transliteration for a technical form is a separate task from translating the message, and should not silently replace a person’s official identifier.
