English to Odia: make courtesy and reference explicit
A short English request leaves the social choice open
Odia distinguishes forms of address including ତୁ, ତୁମେ, and respectful ଆପଣ. They are not freely interchangeable equivalents of English “you.” Decide whom the writer is addressing and the relationship involved. A friendly message to a customer need not use the most intimate form simply because the English is brief.
Verb forms can also express the chosen level of address. A respectful pronoun is not enough if the rest of the clause belongs to a different level. When adapting a saved message for another recipient, check the whole request. The appropriate voice depends on the people and setting rather than a rule that every message should sound equally formal.
Some English gender information is not repeated in a pronoun
Odia ସେ can refer to “he” or “she.” An English source can therefore distinguish a person’s gender more explicitly than the ordinary Odia pronoun does. This does not automatically make the target incomplete. Where several people are involved, retain a name or clear description so the reader can identify the intended person.
Do not add unnecessary gender descriptions merely to compensate for a grammatical difference. The important question is whether the Odia reader can follow who performed the action. A short report can become clearer through one repeated name rather than a chain of pronouns that all have plausible referents.
Counting an item is not always numeral plus bare noun
Odia can use classifiers in quantified noun phrases. ଜଣେ ଛାତ୍ର means “a student,” using a human classifier; ଦଶଟି ଫୁଲ means “ten flowers.” The extra target material is doing grammatical work. It should not be removed just because English expresses the same idea with fewer visible parts.
When translating a list or order, establish whether it counts people, individual objects, or a measured quantity. A phrase about five litres of oil does not use exactly the same structure as one naming five teachers. Preserve what is being counted rather than choosing a single marker for every English number.
Use the Odia script for the actual target word
ପାଣି means “water.” A common word should be translated for its meaning, while a personal name may need an established spelling or transliteration. Odia’s rounded letter forms are a distinct writing system, not a reason to substitute Bengali or Devanagari characters that look vaguely similar.
Keep vowel signs and consonant combinations intact when copying the result. For local services, use terminology recognisable to the intended Odia audience rather than an unnecessarily elaborate synonym. Finally, check names, dates, amounts, and reference codes separately from the sentence. Clear target prose is useful only if the recipient can still identify the correct booking, document, or transaction.
