English to Nepali: respect belongs in the verb too
Choose the relationship that English “you” leaves unstated
Nepali distinguishes levels of address through pronouns and associated verbal forms. तपाईं is a respectful option, while तिमी is more familiar. तँ belongs to especially intimate or potentially disrespectful settings. A short English request does not provide enough information to choose among them automatically. Identify the recipient and relationship before deciding whether the output fits.
For a first message to an unfamiliar adult or professional contact, respectful wording is a useful starting point. In a close friendship, familiar language may be appropriate. Keep the chosen level consistent. A respectful pronoun followed by a familiar verb ending does not reliably preserve the intended courtesy. When adapting a saved response, review the whole clause rather than replacing only the name.
A greeting illustrates the need for consistent forms
तपाईंलाई कस्तो छ? can ask respectfully “How are you?” The phrase is useful as a whole expression; it is not assembled by preserving the position of each English word. In a practical message, use the formulation that suits the interaction instead of adding an isolated equivalent of “please” to a sentence whose grammar remains inappropriately familiar.
Courtesy also applies when referring to someone else. An English “he” or “she” does not show whether that person is being discussed respectfully. Nepali offers different forms for such reference. A name or a description of the person’s role can help establish the appropriate voice when the source sentence is too short to do so.
English relationships move after Nepali nouns
“In the house” can be घरमा, with the location marker attached after घर. English puts “in” before the noun; Nepali packages the relationship differently. A compact target form is therefore not automatically missing a word. Identify what relationship the full expression conveys before checking the translation against an English word count.
Likewise, “my house” is मेरो घर. A location statement and a possessive label are different constructions even though both contain the word “house.” Keep their intended functions separate when reusing text. An address, a destination, and a statement of ownership should not be treated as equivalent merely because the main noun stays unchanged.
Use Nepali as Nepali, even in a familiar script
Nepali uses Devanagari, but sharing a script with Hindi does not make the vocabulary and verb patterns interchangeable. A familiar-looking word should be checked in its Nepali context. Prefer established Nepali wording for local services and documents rather than importing a Hindi expression simply because it looks readable.
For names and dates, retain the underlying identity while changing the prose. Do not silently convert a date between calendars without knowing which calendar the original means. Preserve reference codes exactly, and use an established Nepali spelling for a person or place when available. These details make the message usable beyond a grammatically polished sentence.
