Building a Basque sentence from the roles in an English message

Identify the actor before choosing the pronoun form

English I stays the same whether somebody arrives or brings an object. Basque distinguishes those grammatical relationships. “I have arrived” can be “Ni etorri naiz,” while “I have brought the book” can be “Nik liburua ekarri dut.” The change from ni to nik is connected with the different construction, not with extra politeness or a different speaker.

The ending associated with the actor of a transitive construction is often called ergative. A practical writer need not memorize that label to check the message, but must preserve who does what to whom. Do not add the same -k form to every English subject. Arriving and bringing something assign different roles, and other constructions introduce further participants.

English order alone is therefore not a sufficient plan for a Basque translation. First identify the actor, the item, and any receiver. Then check the corresponding noun forms and verb agreement together. A grammatical-looking collection of nouns can still misrepresent the exchange if the person bringing a document becomes its recipient.

The auxiliary carries information, not just a tense label

In many Basque constructions, a lexical verb appears with an inflected auxiliary. Naiz and dut in the examples above do different grammatical work. Choosing one generic equivalent of English am or have will not produce the right verb phrase. The auxiliary may reflect participants as well as tense and other grammatical distinctions.

When an English reply leaves an item or person understood, keep that reference available while checking the Basque verb. A short answer about the same book may omit a noun without losing the participant information. Do not assume that a missing written pronoun means there is no agreement to check.

Translate location as a complete expression

“The book is on the table” can be “Liburua mahai gainean dago.” The Basque place expression does not follow the English pattern of a free preposition placed before the noun. Its internal structure and the location verb belong together. Copying English word order piece by piece is unlikely to preserve the intended relationship naturally.

Distinguish where an object is from where it is moving. Basque has forms for place, destination, and origin, so a delivery update should keep those meanings separate. A recipient needs to know whether the book is already on a table, is being taken somewhere, or has been collected from there.

Use standard wording without importing English gender

Basque nouns do not have the general masculine/feminine agreement system found in many neighboring languages. Do not manufacture a gender ending for an ordinary object or adjective just because an English person is he or she. Where identifying a person matters, keep their established name or relevant description.

For a broad written audience, consistent standard Basque is a useful editorial choice. Regional forms can be meaningful, but should be used deliberately rather than mixed together. The message should preserve its actual participants and location, while letting Basque grammar organize the sentence.
