What an English writer should check in a Bashkir message
Keep the Bashkir letters rather than approximating Russian spelling
Modern written Bashkir uses Cyrillic with letters that do not belong to the ordinary Russian alphabet. A reader may recognize much of the script and still overlook meaningful distinctions. Letters such as ә, ө, ү, ҡ, ғ, ң, ҙ, ҫ and һ should remain intact when copying a translation into a message.
‘Thank you’ is ‘Рәхмәт’. Replacing ә with a more familiar-looking vowel is not an improvement in spelling. Likewise, do not retype an unfamiliar Bashkir letter as the nearest Russian letter merely because it is easier to find on your keyboard. Copy the translated word as text and keep personal names in their supplied spelling where that spelling identifies an existing person or record.
English ‘you’ needs a number and relationship decision
Bashkir distinguishes familiar singular һин from plural һеҙ, which can also express respectful address to one person. English you alone does not tell the translator which relationship is intended. A message to a friend, a first professional contact and a group of customers should therefore not be judged against one universal second-person form.
Identify the audience before translating a request. If one customer is being addressed respectfully, plural-looking agreement may be appropriate even though the English message concerns one person. Keep the chosen form consistent across pronouns and the associated predicate. Changing an isolated pronoun after translation can leave the rest of the sentence in a different form of address.
Several English words can become suffixes on a Bashkir word
Bashkir uses suffixes extensively to express grammatical relationships. Plurality, possession and case can appear as endings rather than as separate English words. Their form is influenced by the word they attach to, including patterns of vowel and consonant harmony. Do not assume one ending can be copied unchanged onto every noun.
‘Books’ can be ‘китаптар’, with a plural ending attached to the noun for book. A phrase may add further grammatical information after that plural form. If the translated word looks longer than its English counterpart, inspect its role before deleting a section that resembles an extra word. In a message about a document’s owner or destination, the ending may carry precisely the information the recipient needs.
Review the predicate instead of restoring English order
A neutral Bashkir clause commonly places the main action after the object. Other relationships may be marked by case endings or postpositions. Reordering the output to resemble English can damage a sentence that was already using normal Bashkir structure.
Short location statements also need not display a separate counterpart of every English word. ‘Azat is at home’ can be ‘Азат өйҙә’. The location expression conveys being at home without reproducing an independent English is. For a meeting or pickup message, check the named person and location together. If the next sentence concerns someone else, name that person clearly in the English source rather than relying on repeated he or she references that could attach to the wrong participant.
