English to Armenian: choose a variety before composing the sentence
Armenian is not one interchangeable set of forms
Eastern and Western Armenian are modern standards with differences in vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar. Specify the intended audience when a personal or professional message needs one of them. A generic Armenian target label alone does not prove that every output will match a particular community’s preferred forms.
The examples here use Eastern Armenian. “Hello” can be “Բարև,” and “Thank you” can be “Շնորհակալություն.” Other varieties and registers can use different established forms. Do not assemble one paragraph from unrelated standard choices merely because each phrase appears somewhere in an Armenian resource. Consistency helps a recipient read the message naturally.
Do not paste English be into a fixed position
“I am at home” can be “Ես տանն եմ” in Eastern Armenian. The location expression and copula form work together; English subject–am–location order does not prescribe the target sequence. Build the complete Armenian construction rather than mapping each English word into the same position.
The same care applies to identity, description, possession, and existence. English be and have cover relationships that may need different Armenian forms. Determine whether the source describes a person, locates an item, or states that something is available. A natural target should preserve that relationship without borrowing an unrelated construction simply because its English gloss contains the same verb.
You requires number and relationship; he and she may merge
Armenian distinguishes familiar singular and plural or polite forms of address. English you does not reveal which one is intended. Follow the actual exchange and keep the corresponding verb forms consistent. A message to several friends differs from a first request to one unfamiliar customer even where both use a plural-looking address pattern.
Conversely, Armenian third-person pronouns do not preserve the English he/she distinction. If a paragraph relies on gendered pronouns to separate two people, repeat the names where necessary. The target should preserve who acts without adding unnecessary gender descriptions or leaving a reference ambiguous.
Keep spelling, case relationships, and identifiers intact
Armenian nouns and related expressions can mark grammatical relationships through endings. A recipient, an owner, and a location are not handled by copying one English preposition into every phrase. Choose the actual noun construction and ensure the other words still refer to the intended participant.
Traditional and reformed spelling choices should also be coherent with the intended written variety. Do not treat an unfamiliar spelling automatically as an error. For a person’s name, use their actual Armenian form or official identifier when known rather than inventing one from an English approximation. Keep URLs, email addresses, and booking codes usable even when the surrounding prose changes script; these strings often need exact preservation rather than translation.
