Turning an English update into natural Afrikaans

A negative sentence may need a closing nie

Afrikaans commonly expresses negation with more than one negative element. “I do not have time today” can be “Ek het nie vandag tyd nie.” The final nie is part of the ordinary negative construction; it does not cancel the earlier negative and make the statement positive. Removing it to imitate English can leave the sentence incomplete in its intended form.

Negation has different patterns, so do not turn that observation into an instruction to put two nie words into every sentence. Short clauses, particular negative words, and some other constructions behave differently. Identify the exact statement being denied before checking the placement. Not today, not that item, and not doing the action carry different practical messages.

This matters in availability replies and delivery instructions. A translation should preserve the scope of the refusal rather than becoming a general rejection. Keep the object and time phrase together with the negative construction when checking the result.

The lexical verb can move away from its English position

“I sent the email yesterday” can be “Ek het gister die e-pos gestuur.” Afrikaans expresses the past with het and the participle in this example, placing the lexical verb after the time and object information. English word order is therefore not a safe sequence of slots to fill with Afrikaans words.

Do not insert het before every English past-tense equivalent without checking the actual verb and construction. Some frequent verbs and expressions have their own behavior. The useful principle is to translate the full event: who acted, what was sent, and when it happened. A finished message should not become a claim of present possession merely because het can also relate to having.

Choose the form of “you” that belongs to this relationship

Afrikaans distinguishes familiar jy and julle from courteous u. English you does not identify whether the recipient is one friend, a group, or someone addressed formally. “Can you help me?” can be “Kan u my help?” in a courteous exchange. A familiar message may use a different pronoun without changing the requested help.

Courtesy is context-sensitive, so u is not an automatic requirement for every person the writer has not met. Consider the established tone and audience. Avoid switching between forms in the middle of a short customer message, and do not add family-style titles without evidence that the relationship calls for them.

Keep common vocabulary distinct from English-looking guesses

English and Afrikaans share recognizable vocabulary, but recognition does not determine the right word for every situation. An administrative email, a personal text, and a delivery note may require different expressions even where the same English verb appears. Check what the object or action actually is before choosing a familiar-looking form.

Retain established spellings in names and addresses and the normal marks in edited Afrikaans. The final message should make the availability, completed action, and recipient relationship clear. Those details are more useful than reproducing the exact number or order of English words.
