Dutch to Italian: resolve address, preference, and past viewpoint

Do not interpret every Dutch “you” as Italian tu

Dutch distinguishes familiar singular je/jij, familiar plural jullie, and polite u. Italian needs a corresponding decision among tu, ordinary plural voi, and polite singular Lei. The relationship must be established before conjugating the sentence. “Kunt u morgen komen?” can be “Può venire domani?” when politely addressing one person. The Italian verb has third-person singular form even though the message speaks directly to its reader.

If Dutch u addresses several people, that same Italian singular version will not preserve the number. Name the recipients or choose an appropriate plural address. Conversely, jullie is not an invitation to make a message formal merely because Italian uses voi for the plural. Follow the existing relationship and avoid switching between familiar and polite forms in later sentences.

Move the late Dutch verb back into the Italian clause

Dutch subordinate clauses commonly keep their finite verb toward the end. Italian normally places it earlier with its subject. “Ik denk dat de winkel morgen open is” becomes “Penso che il negozio sia aperto domani.” Besides changing order, this version uses a subjunctive after penso che in a carefully written statement of belief. Reproducing the Dutch indicative mechanically would miss a choice governed by Italian grammar.

Italian can omit the subject pronoun when the verb and context identify it. Repeating io every time Dutch uses ik can add emphasis. Keep an explicit pronoun when there is a genuine contrast, such as the writer’s plan versus a colleague’s plan, or when omission would leave the actor unclear.

A preference can reverse the grammatical roles

Dutch describes liking with constructions that do not map word for word to Italian piacere. “Ik vind dit boek leuk” can be “Mi piace questo libro.” The book is the grammatical subject of piace, while mi identifies the person who likes it. If several books are meant, the Italian verb must reflect the plural subject.

This distinction is useful in reviews and recommendations. Establish whether the Dutch message describes personal enjoyment, approval of a choice, or attraction to a person. Those are related meanings, but the most suitable Italian expression may change. Do not assume that a favorable adjective always communicates romantic interest.

Choose an Italian past from the event’s shape

A Dutch past-tense account can require more than one Italian past form. Italian imperfetto commonly presents an ongoing background or habit, while a completed event can call for passato prossimo or another appropriate narrative tense. A report about weather during a delayed journey needs a different viewpoint from the one-time cancellation itself. Map the sequence before deciding on endings.

For appointments, convert Dutch clock phrases to a numerical time before composing the Italian sentence. Half acht means 7:30, not 8:30. Use the stated part of the day to distinguish 07:30 from 19:30, and retain an explicit date. This prevents a fluent Italian message from carrying a scheduling mistake inherited from a literal reading of Dutch.
