Dogri to Uyghur: specific objects, personal acquaintance and ownership

Similar verb-final order does not make object marking identical

Dogri and Uyghur both commonly place the verb after its object. That resemblance can make a translation look reassuringly familiar while concealing a different decision about the object. Travis Major’s Uyghur research contrasts alma, an apple, with almi-ni, an accusative-marked apple interpreted as specific in the example. The added ending is not required simply because the noun occurs before a transitive verb.

For a Dogri message about buying or eating fruit, establish whether it refers to an unspecified item or to a particular one already under discussion. Do not demand an ending on every Uyghur object, or remove one merely because the source relationship is expressed differently. Major also documents restrictions on moving an unmarked object away from its usual position. Dogri’s flexible word order is therefore not a license to preserve every source arrangement in Uyghur. The target’s interpretation and the object’s position must be considered together.

Knowing a person is different from knowing about that person

A short Dogri statement about knowing someone can describe personal acquaintance or awareness of their identity. The Uyghur handbook by Engesæth, Yakup and Dwyer makes this distinction explicit. Its example Men Ablizni tonuymen means that the speaker knows or has become acquainted with Abliz. The verb tonu- is used for familiarity, usually with people; bil- concerns knowledge or understanding and can include knowing that somebody exists.

This distinction becomes useful in introductions. A source message identifying a well-known performer should not necessarily imply that the speaker has met the performer. Conversely, a message saying that a colleague can personally introduce someone needs more than recognition of the name. The handbook even contrasts knowing about an artist with not being personally acquainted with that artist. Translate the kind of knowledge intended by the Dogri sentence, rather than choosing a Uyghur verb solely because an intermediate English gloss says know.

Possessive information can move onto the thing possessed

Sawhney describes Dogri genitive da as agreeing with its head noun. Uyghur possession instead includes morphology on the possessed noun that identifies the possessor’s person and number, as documented by the Uyghur Universal Dependencies team. The source’s agreement changes and the target’s ownership endings consequently answer different questions. One concerns properties of the head; the other can identify whose possession it is.

When a Dogri possessive expression accompanies a document or personal item, separate the owner from the item before comparing the output. Uyghur does not reproduce Dogri grammatical gender agreement, but that does not permit losing the owner. A longer target noun can contain the required ownership information even when a separate source word has disappeared. Conversely, matching the number of written words cannot demonstrate that a distinction between my and our has survived. Read the ownership construction as a unit.
