Dogri to Tahitian: who joins us, where writing happens and meaningful vowel marks

A plural speaker may need a more precise Tahitian pronoun

A Dogri announcement using first-person plural əss can leave the reader to infer whether the recipient belongs to the group. Tahitian makes this distinction inside its pronoun system. The official 2016 teaching annex gives tātou for we including the person addressed and mātou for we excluding that person. A Dogri invitation and a report about what the speaker’s colleagues will do can therefore require different Tahitian pronouns despite sharing the same source form.

The same annex distinguishes tāua, you and I, from māua, another person and I. These are dual forms, so the decision involves both membership and group size. For a two-person arrangement, specifying that the other participant is the recipient prevents a translation from appearing to describe a separate pair. Dogri singular versus plural information alone cannot select among all these target possibilities. This is an ambiguity worth resolving in the source message rather than guessing from the final word count.

A writing update may encode viewpoint as well as progress

The comparative study by Florent, Carole and Félix Atem gives Tē papa’i nei au i tā’u rata for I am writing my letter. Its paired second-person example uses na, while the third-person example uses ra. In that discussion, the particles locate the activity relative to the speaker, addressee or a third participant. They are not personal endings equivalent to the changes a reader might expect on a Dogri verb.

This matters when a Dogri message says that somebody is currently preparing correspondence. Identify the writer and the location or viewpoint supplied by the conversation before interpreting the small Tahitian particles as redundant words. The same study shows that ra also occurs with past reference and can express spatial distance in a present situation. It would therefore be misleading to reject every ra as an incorrect past tense in an update about something happening now. The surrounding construction supplies the interpretation.

A macron or glottal mark can identify a different word

The French education ministry’s Tahitian curriculum contrasts matau, a fishhook, mātau, becoming acquainted, and mata’u, being afraid. These examples demonstrate why removing marks after translation can change the vocabulary itself. A Dogri statement about fear cannot be evaluated by searching only for an unmarked Latin-letter approximation. The position and type of mark are part of the target distinction.

Dogri’s own phonemic tone should not encourage a sound-for-sound substitution here. Tahitian vowel length and its glottal consonant are different linguistic features, not alternative notation for a Dogri tone. For translated prose, preserve the conventional spelling of the selected Tahitian word. For a retained Dogri personal name, treat its representation as a separate naming decision rather than imposing the spellings of superficially similar Tahitian vocabulary.
