Dogri to Sinhala: preserve control over an event and respect the target spelling

Listening deliberately is different from hearing something

Jany’s study of spoken Sinhala contrasts ahannə, to listen, with æhennə, to hear. A Dogri account of someone intentionally attending to a sound must therefore be distinguished from one in which a sound becomes perceptible without deliberate effort. Treating the two source meanings as interchangeable can change the person’s involvement in the event even if the translated sentence still concerns the same sound. Her mamə diuw-a, I ran, illustrates a nominative single participant; the case form must be interpreted with its event.

The paper relates many Sinhala verb choices to volition and control, with corresponding effects on case marking. It also cautions that the correlation is not complete: not every verb has a regular counterpart, and the semantic distinction does not always follow a predictable change in form. A Dogri source describing an accidental occurrence should not be converted by mechanically modifying a memorised Sinhala verb. Identify whether the event was controlled and use an attested target construction.

Dogri’s oblique and postpositional forms give useful participant clues, but they do not determine the Sinhala experiencer pattern. Jany’s spoken-language analysis allows several case markings for a single argument, depending on the construction. A dative-looking person can experience an event rather than receive a transferred object. Preserve that role instead of assigning recipient meaning from the case label alone.

Related writing principles do not supply interchangeable letters

A Dogri reader familiar with Devanagari has experience with independent vowel letters and dependent signs attached to consonants. MacDougall’s Foreign Service Institute Sinhala introduction describes comparable structural principles but a distinct set of symbols. Sinhala is written left to right, and some noninitial vowel signs occur above or below other letters. A translated word’s visual layout can thus be more compact than its sequence of sounds suggests.

The course also explains why formal Sinhala spelling includes letters associated historically with aspirated consonants even though the corresponding spoken contrasts have been lost. A technical or administrative term can retain such a spelling without requiring a separately pronounced aspirated sound. Do not replace the written form with a simpler-looking character merely because a familiar Dogri reading strategy suggests the same pronunciation. Historical spelling and current sound distinctions do not always coincide.

Dogri adds its own warning against direct letter-to-sound transfer. Kumar identifies three tonal contrasts, while the CIIL primer tradition describes position-dependent realisations of certain written consonants. Familiarity with an Indic script therefore does not establish how a Sinhala borrowed term should be written or spoken. In a Dogri-to-Sinhala translation, select the correct target word first and preserve its conventional spelling; copying source letter categories into Sinhala would be transliteration by analogy rather than a reliable translation.
