Dogri to Sesotho: whose home is it, and where are they staying?

A home expression can include its personal reference

Sawhney illustrates Dogri possession with mera kar, my house. A source phrase of this kind identifies an owner or associated person through material before the head noun. The Peace Corps Sesotho manual illustrates haeso for my home and haeno for your home. A target home expression can therefore change its own shape when the associated person changes.

For a Dogri exchange asking about somebody’s home, a short target answer need not repeat a separate full possessive phrase word for word. But its personal reference must remain correct. Replacing my home with your home would reverse whose circumstances are being described even if the same place name followed.

The manual’s home drill explicitly alternates a question about the speaker’s home with a reply about the addressee’s home. This is useful when translating a dialogue: the person asking and the person answering have different standpoints. Do not keep the same apparent person label just because the same home remains the topic.

A third-person home does not need an invented owner gender

The Sesotho drill glosses Hahabo ke kae? as asking where his or her home is. It therefore does not force a male owner merely because an English explanation happens to use his first. Sawhney likewise describes Dogri personal pronouns without a grammatical gender distinction, even though Dogri possession markers can agree with the possessed head.

For an original Dogri message about a visitor’s home, distinguish the visitor’s identity from the gender of the Dogri noun for the dwelling. The source noun’s gender cannot establish that the visitor is male or female. A Sesotho expression compatible with either can preserve the reference without making that unsupported choice.

The manual also distinguishes home expressions for plural participants. A Dogri conversation about one family member’s home and another about the whole group’s home should not be merged simply because the destination or country is identical. Person and group reference belong to the home expression, while the following location identifies where that home is.

Home, temporary residence and immediate origin are different answers

The same teaching dialogue asks where people stay, where they work and where they come from as separate questions. Its review includes Ke tsoa ofising, I come from the office. That statement gives an immediate point of origin in the dialogue, not an ownership claim about an office or a declaration that the office is home.

Dogri postpositions and possession forms similarly require their relationship to be interpreted before translation. An original source message about somebody returning from work should not become a Sesotho answer about the location of their permanent home. A shared place noun cannot compensate for choosing the wrong relation.

For this direction, keep three readings apart when a house or place appears: association with a home, current residence, and the origin of a journey. The Dogri head noun and surrounding markers help establish which is intended. Sesotho can package personal home reference compactly, but that compactness does not erase the difference between belonging somewhere, staying somewhere and arriving from somewhere.
