Dogri to Nyanja: a chase in one direction or an action shared both ways

Two groups in a report do not automatically act on each other

A Dogri account of a playground incident may describe one group pursuing another, or describe the two groups chasing each other. Those are different accounts of responsibility. Translating both as a general scene involving several children would lose the distinction between a one-way action and a reciprocal one.

Sam Mchombo’s Chichewa research abstract, preserved by Stanford, illustrates this contrast using hunters and fishermen. Its nonreciprocal verb is presented as “a-ku-thamangits-a”; the reciprocal example has “a-ku-thamangits-an-a”. The added reciprocal element belongs inside the verb. It is therefore possible for a small visible difference in the translation to carry an important change in who acts on whom.

These are Chichewa research examples, useful within the wider Nyanja language context rather than a claim that every regional variety uses identical wording. They show why checking only the nouns is insufficient. Both participant groups can remain present while the relationship between them changes.

Dogri ordering and target reciprocity solve different problems

Sawhney describes Dogri as allowing variation around its usual subject–object–verb order, with grammatical marking helping identify participant roles. A group mentioned first in a Dogri sentence should consequently not be assumed to be the pursuer solely because it comes first. Establish the roles from the complete construction and its context.

Once those roles are clear, determine whether the event actually runs both ways. A report that the older children chased the younger children does not become reciprocal because the younger children later complained. The complaint is another event, not evidence that both groups participated equally in the chase.

Likewise, a sentence saying that the groups chased each other does not identify a sole pursuer. If a later sentence singles out one child as starting the game, preserve that additional claim separately. Starting an activity and participating in a reciprocal activity answer different questions about the same scene.

A phrase meaning with can participate in the reciprocal construction

Mchombo also presents a reciprocal construction in which the second group follows “ndi”, glossed with, instead of appearing in an ordinary coordinated subject. His discussion connects this option with agreement issues. A literal reading of that linking word alone would miss the reciprocal interpretation carried by the whole construction.

For a Dogri message, distinguish shared company from mutual action. Two families can travel together without visiting each other, and two teams can practise at the same ground without playing against each other. The presence of two groups, or a word suggesting togetherness, does not establish the intended relationship by itself.

When reviewing an incident translation, trace one action at a time: who pursued, who was pursued, and whether those roles also reverse within that action. This gives a concrete way to detect a changed account without trying to reconstruct every target suffix.

If the source is uncertain about who acted first, keep that uncertainty. Reciprocity does not settle the sequence of initiation, and a translator should not supply a first aggressor merely to make the narrative easier to follow.
