Dogri to Burmese: the position and function of short particles matter

An imperative ending and a postposition can look alike

Dogri uses postpositions after their complements, including a form for accompaniment. Burmese also places နဲ့ after a noun to mean with in NIU’s introductory lesson. However, the same written form participates in the negative imperative construction မ…နဲ့ around a verb. A translated Dogri instruction containing နဲ့ should therefore be interpreted through its complete construction, not through one memorised meaning of the particle.

The contrast is practical: accompanying someone and telling someone not to come are different relationships. NIU gives မလာနဲ့ for do not come and adds ပါ in a polite version. The initial negative element, the verb and the ending work together. Removing the ending because it looks like an unnecessary with can damage the prohibition. Conversely, a noun followed by နဲ့ in an accompaniment phrase does not make the whole sentence a negative command.

A similar-looking element may point to the future

NIU’s question lesson places မ after the verb in illustrated future questions, followed by a question ending. Its သူ ဘာစာအုပ် ဖတ်မလဲ asks what book someone will read. Compare that postverbal position with the negative element before the verb in the imperative pattern. A Dogri question about a future action must not be read as a negative instruction merely because the Burmese result contains the same short written element.

Dogri’s predominant verb-final order gives a reader some familiarity with information concentrated toward a clause’s end. Yet the Burmese ending adds its own distinctions. The NIU material uses လဲ for questions seeking information beyond yes or no, while မယ် occurs in its positive future statements. Preserve whether the source asks which item someone will read, predicts a reading event or prohibits it. Those differences involve the target pattern surrounding the verb, not just the translation of read.

Respect includes the speaker’s role as well as the recipient’s

Sawhney describes Dogri tuss as respectful singular as well as plural, contrasting it with familiar tu. Burmese conversational politeness introduces another choice. NIU’s first lesson distinguishes final ခင်ဗျာ for male speakers from ရှင် for female speakers. These tags concern who is speaking; they do not simply label the addressee as male or female.

A Dogri introduction addressed respectfully to one person can therefore require information about the writer’s speaking role that respectful tuss alone does not supply. The source’s social meaning should be preserved, but the target expression cannot be selected by replacing a single second-person pronoun. The NIU examples illustrate conversational introductions, so the tags should not be inserted mechanically into every impersonal notice. A public announcement and a person introducing themselves do not have identical conversational structures.
