Dogri to Khmer: counting people and making respectful requests

A number can require a counting unit rather than a plural ending

Dogri nouns change for number, and Sawhney notes that a cardinal numeral can take an oblique form when its noun does. Khmer does not reproduce this agreement pattern. NIU’s lesson instead illustrates a sequence of noun, number and counting unit, including គ្រូបង្រៀន ពីរ នាក់ for two teachers. The last word counts people; it is not a translation of an oblique Dogri ending.

The same Khmer lesson uses different counting units with animals, long objects and individual fruit. A Dogri list containing several kinds of items may therefore need different Khmer constructions even if every source line uses the same numeral. The distinction can affect quantity itself: individual bananas and a hand of bananas are different units. Translate the intended counting unit as well as the numeral, rather than treating every extra target word as removable repetition.

Respect cannot be carried by tuss alone

Dogri familiar tu and respectful tuss distinguish ways of addressing someone. NIU’s Khmer introduction shows a broader set of personal references sensitive to relative age, status and situation. It presents លោក and លោកស្រី as formal respectful forms associated with male and female addressees. A respectful Dogri source consequently provides useful social information, but it does not uniquely determine one Khmer word for you.

This matters when translating a Dogri request to an older relative versus a formal enquiry to an unfamiliar official. Both may be respectful without requiring identical Khmer address. The target expression can also identify social relationships where the source uses a short pronoun. Avoid interpreting that additional material as an invented participant. At the same time, keep literal number separate from respect: tuss can address one person or several, and the Khmer sentence still needs to refer to the intended audience.

Asking permission differs from instructing politely

A Dogri source can express a request through its complete verb construction and choice of address. Khmer likewise distinguishes the action requested from the politeness surrounding it. Vathanak Sok’s university textbook presents សុំ…បានទេ as a pattern for asking permission or making a request, while សូម can introduce a polite instruction. Its សូមចាំទីនេះ means please wait here. That instruction is not the same speech act as asking whether the speaker may wait there.

For a Dogri telephone enquiry, identify whether the caller wants permission to speak, asks about someone’s availability or tells another person to wait. Choosing the right respectful pronoun does not resolve those differences. The textbook notes that សុំ and សូម can overlap in use, so they should not be treated as a rigid one-word contrast applicable to every situation. Preserve who is expected to act and whether the source asks for consent. Those relationships determine the useful Khmer request construction more reliably than adding a polite word to a literal source order.
