Dogri to Finnish: distinguish case, existence and the owner

An oblique Dogri word is not a ready-made Finnish case

Dogri nouns distinguish masculine and feminine gender, number and forms including an oblique used before postpositions. Finnish also changes noun forms, but the categories do not line up. The Finnish Universal Dependencies description records no grammatical gender and a much larger set of cases. A Dogri oblique ending therefore cannot identify a single Finnish ending. The relationship expressed by the entire Dogri phrase determines whether the Finnish translation needs a location, direction, source or another construction.

The Dogri survey illustrates a phrase meaning on the tree with buṭe pe. Its relationship word follows the noun. Finnish can encode spatial relationships inside a noun form, while also using adpositions in other constructions. Treating every Dogri postposition as a separate Finnish word would miss that choice. Equally, a feminine Dogri noun does not require a feminine Finnish adjective: the target lacks that gender distinction, though its words still carry other agreement and case information.

Partitive does more than identify an object

A Finnish translation may change the form of a noun when the quantity is open or an event is not presented as reaching an endpoint. These distinctions are not recoverable merely by recognising the Dogri noun’s gender or its dictionary meaning. Riho Grünthal’s research describes negative phrases, unbounded events and unspecified quantities among the Finnic partitive’s functions. Establish whether the Dogri message concerns a whole result, an ongoing activity or an unspecified amount before interpreting an unexpected Finnish ending as an error.

The same study gives Koulussa oli pieniä lapsia, meaning that there were small children at school. Both pieniä and lapsia have partitive plural forms, yet the children are not an object being acted upon. This matters for a Dogri description of who was present somewhere: a Finnish partitive is compatible with an existential sentence. Conversely, the Finnish school expression carries location in -ssa. Several target endings can serve different purposes within one short translation.

A suffix can identify a person outside an ownership phrase

Finnish possessive suffixes are not confined to literal belongings. Huhmarniemi and Brattico illustrate minun lähelläni, near me, with a first-person suffix on the expression for proximity. Compare this with a Dogri postpositional phrase: recognising that both describe a relationship does not mean the target can copy the source’s individual word boundaries. The suffix contributes person information even though nobody owns the nearby location.

The researchers also give pyöränsä in a sentence about someone finding their bicycle. Here the suffix relates the bicycle to a third-person possessor, but it does not separately mark that possessor as singular or plural. A Dogri source may make that distinction elsewhere. Preserve the participant relationship across the complete Finnish sentence rather than assuming that an apparently missing independent pronoun has lost the owner. Shorter wording can still contain person information inside a word.
