Divehi to Ukrainian: a changed object ending does not automatically change the object
A negative Divehi noun form can hide its definiteness
Gnanadesikan explains that Divehi negative concord commonly uses forms resembling indefinite or unspecified noun inflection. Within a negative context, the usual morphological distinction between definite and indefinite nouns can therefore become obscured. For Ukrainian translation, this means that the source ending alone cannot settle whether the message concerns a previously identified object or an unspecified example of its kind.
The object’s earlier mention still matters. If a Divehi speaker denies selling something already discussed, a concord-related noun change does not necessarily introduce another item. Conversely, a denial about any member of a category should not acquire a specific object merely because the Ukrainian dictionary supplies one familiar nominative form. Preserve the source referent while selecting the target case.
This also separates negative concord from possession. Divehi genitive marking belongs to a different part of the case system. A source noun affected by negation is not automatically an owner, and a Ukrainian ending traditionally called genitive does not always describe ownership either. The labels identify grammatical categories, not identical meanings across the languages.
Ukrainian objects need not look like dictionary headwords
The University of Kansas textbook Добра форма introduces inanimate direct objects through affirmative sentences and questions. It illustrates піцу as an object form in an order involving food. The relevant feminine noun changes ending, whereas many other inanimate nouns have matching nominative and accusative forms. A translation can therefore contain a real object without every object noun visibly changing.
For a Divehi ordering message, distinguish the requested item from the person requesting it before judging its Ukrainian ending. The textbook’s examples also include an answer that names the ordered items while leaving the action verb understood. A short target response can retain object grammar even when it is not a full sentence with an overt subject and verb.
That possibility is useful when translating brief Divehi replies in a conversation. Do not replace an inflected Ukrainian item with a dictionary form solely because the reply lacks a written verb. Its grammatical role can come from the preceding question, just as its reference can come from earlier discourse.
The genitive has more than one explanation
Chaika, Lehka, Tamm and Vaiss review Ukrainian object-case functions before presenting their corpus research. Their discussion reproduces Він не продав стола as a negative selling sentence, with a genitive object. In another example, Ми чекали автобуса, the genitive occurs with waiting rather than with a negative verb. These are different grammatical reasons for a similar-looking ending.
A Divehi-to-Ukrainian translation should therefore not interpret every target genitive as evidence that somebody owns the object, nor insert a negative meaning into an affirmative waiting sentence. The reviewed examples also contrast a specified bus with an accusative construction. Lexical choice and object interpretation contribute alongside polarity.
For this direction, establish the action, whether it is denied, and which object the speaker means. Those decisions guide the Ukrainian construction. A visible suffix correspondence between the two languages is weaker evidence than the role and reference of the object in the complete exchange.
