Divehi to Tongan: two people should not become an unspecified larger group

The Divehi numeral can determine the target pronoun

A Divehi sentence can identify two people with an explicit numeral even when its personal pronouns do not offer a dedicated dual form. Tongan distinguishes a two-person reference from a larger plural group. When the source later refers back to those same people, the count established earlier remains part of the meaning.

Fritz’s standard-language example e de bēfuḷun describes two gentlemen going fishing. Her analysis identifies de as two and the following personal noun in its plural form. The explicit numeral fixes the group size. A translation should not ignore that count merely because the noun belongs to a plural paradigm rather than a separate dual paradigm.

The Tongan teaching table distinguishes pre-verbal na for they two from nau for they in a larger group. Its corresponding independent forms include kinaua and kinautolu. The target decision therefore depends on how many people the Divehi message actually identifies, not simply on whether its source pronoun is broadly plural.

Who belongs to we is a separate decision from how many

Imagine a Divehi report identifying two fishers and then saying that they returned late. The later they should continue to identify those two people unless the message adds somebody else. A Tongan larger-plural form would change the group size even though the return event and the lateness were otherwise translated correctly. The earlier numeral supplies the needed information.

A first-person report requires another decision. The Tongan table distinguishes ma for two people excluding the listener from ta for two people including the listener. Both include the speaker, but they assign the other place differently. A Divehi we used in a message to a person who did not travel should not silently become you and I in the translation.

Compare two original intentions: my colleague and I will return, addressed to someone staying behind, and you and I will return, addressed to the colleague. Each describes two people, but only the second includes the listener. Knowing that the Divehi group has two members does not by itself settle which Tongan first-person dual form represents it.

The number of people travelling also differs from the number of boats, fish, or tickets. A Divehi message mentioning two boats might involve more than two passengers. Selecting a dual personal pronoun solely because the nearest numeral is two would attach the count to the wrong referent. Identify which noun phrase the numeral counts before using it to choose a target pronoun.

These distinctions are especially useful when the source moves from a named pair to a short pronoun. Preserve the established group size, then determine whether the speaker and listener belong to that group. Tongan expresses those choices compactly, but the evidence must come from the Divehi participants and numerals. A plural-looking source form should not override an explicit two-person reference or add the listener to a journey they did not make.
