Divehi to Sindhi: demonstrative gender and personal reference should be resolved separately

The same source pointing word can accompany different target forms

Divehi mi can introduce an object close to the speaker, while standard personal reference with ēnā does not distinguish he from she. Sindhi introduces gender distinctions in both demonstrative examples and personal pronouns. A translator needs to establish whether the expression identifies a thing or a person before treating a target form as evidence about sex.

Fritz describes Divehi nouns as lacking grammatical gender. Her discussion also allows nonpersonal demonstrative stems to stand independently or accompany nouns. Consequently, a source writer can point to two different objects using the same mi without supplying a masculine or feminine label. A grammatical gender distinction is not information silently encoded in that source word.

The Sindhi Language Authority lesson separates masculine and feminine singular demonstratives and gives separate plural examples. Its pen example begins هِيءُ قَلَمُ, while a feminine picture example uses اِها تَصِوِيرَ. The gender distinction belongs to the target noun construction. It does not say that the pen belongs to a man or that the picture portrays a woman.

A pointing expression can become a pronoun for a known person

The same lesson lists third-person masculine هُو alongside feminine هُوءَ. When a Divehi passage refers to a person using ēnā, Sindhi may therefore require a distinction absent from the source form itself. A preceding name or an explicit description may establish the intended person; the gender of an unrelated object cannot do that work.

Imagine a Divehi note explaining that a named woman left a pen on a table. A later reference to the pen and a later reference to the woman are different continuations. If the Sindhi translation follows the pen’s grammatical class when referring back to the woman, it changes the human referent. If it follows the woman’s sex when selecting the pen’s demonstrative, it confuses personal reference with noun agreement.

Plural reference adds a further boundary. The official lesson gives plural forms for both persons and things, and illustrates a singular pen against plural pens. A Divehi reference to one particular object should not become several merely because a target demonstrative looks similar to another item in the paradigm. Recover the number from the source noun phrase and conversation, then select the matching target construction.

The source distinction between persons and nonpersons also deserves care. In Fritz’s account, nonpersonal demonstrative usage includes animals and plants as well as inanimate objects. It is therefore unsafe to treat every living referent as though it must follow the human personal-pronoun interpretation. A translation about a person carrying an animal still contains two different kinds of reference, even though both referents are alive.

For a short caption, decide first what each pointing expression identifies: the visible object, the person holding it, or several previously mentioned things. Then keep the Sindhi noun’s grammatical gender distinct from any personal gender information. This preserves the Divehi reference without inventing an owner’s identity or allowing a shift from singular to plural to pass unnoticed.
