Divehi to Romanian: respectful address does not always mean more than one person

Separate the number of listeners from the level of address

Divehi has multiple address forms in the standard-language paradigm described by Fritz. A translation into Romanian must preserve whether the speaker addresses one person or several, while also selecting an appropriate social register. These decisions interact, but a respectful source form cannot simply be treated as a headcount.

The Divehi table distinguishes singular address forms across honorific degrees and supplies corresponding plural forms separately. For example, kalē appears in one singular register, while tia bēkalā or tia bēkalē appears in another. The existence of this source contrast does not imply that every Romanian respectful expression will make exactly the same distinctions or signal precisely the same relationship.

Gönczöl-Davies explains that Romanian dumneavoastră uses second-person plural verb forms even when one person is being addressed. Her examples explicitly give the same form for a singular and plural addressee. A Divehi sentence clearly directed to one respected visitor may therefore produce plural-looking Romanian agreement without introducing additional visitors.

Familiar respect and third-person respect have separate forms

The Romanian grammar contrasts dumneata, which expresses respectful but greater familiarity in its described usage and takes singular agreement. This is a separate choice from dumneavoastră, not a correction that removes an erroneous plural. A Divehi message to an older relative and a message to an unfamiliar official can both be respectful while presenting different relationships. The target choice should reflect the actual relationship rather than a numerical reading of the verb.

The fragments dumneavoastră vreţi and dumneata vrei illustrate this difference in agreement. Both can address one person. If a source invitation asks one individual whether they want a ticket, the target agreement does not by itself establish that several tickets are needed. The number of addressees and the number of requested objects must each be recovered from the Divehi message.

Third-person reference introduces another distinction. Romanian dumnealui and dumneaei respectfully refer to a man or woman rather than addressing that person as you. The cited Divehi standard pronouns do not make a grammatical he versus she distinction in the same way. Respecting a mentioned person and addressing the listener politely are therefore separate tasks; replacing one with the other changes who the sentence is about.

For a short service exchange, identify the person receiving the question, the person mentioned in it, and the level of familiarity between speaker and listener. A Divehi honorific expression may help with register but does not automatically supply Romanian gender distinctions or determine the appropriate form for a third party. Keeping these roles distinct lets the Romanian sentence sound respectful without changing a one-person request into a group request or turning a reported person into the addressee.
