Divehi to Pashto: a missing pronoun and a verb ending can identify different participants

Recover the event before assigning the target endings

Divehi can leave subjects, direct objects and indirect objects unexpressed when understood from the discourse or left vague. The grammar notes limited person marking and an absence of colloquial number marking on the verb. A short source report may therefore contain less overt participant information than a translator expects. Pashto must express the same event through its own agreement and pronoun conventions, rather than treating every source omission as permission to remove the corresponding target word.

The difference becomes particularly important in past transitive clauses. Tegey and Robson describe a pattern in which the Pashto verb agrees with the object, while the actor is oblique. A personal ending in that pattern does not simply identify whoever performed the action. If the Divehi report describes someone taking the writer home, selecting a target ending as though it referred to the taker could reverse the assignment of roles.

Examples of the target pattern are not instructions to guess

The Pashto textbook contrasts examples translated as he took me home and I saw him. In its past-transitive analysis, the verb’s agreement concerns the affected participant, and weak subject pronouns are expressed. Weak object pronouns, on the other hand, can be absent because the ending supplies their information. This is a structured distinction between participants, not a general preference to shorten sentences by dropping whichever pronoun seems redundant.

Divehi null arguments need a different reading process. An unexpressed source object may be understood from the preceding exchange, while a different sentence may deliberately avoid identifying an actor. Those are not equivalent gaps. Where the source fails to identify a participant needed for the selected Pashto construction, inventing a person from the nearest name would change the account. Recover the actual relationship from the exchange, or retain an appropriately nonspecific interpretation rather than turning uncertainty into a confident named actor.

A possessive pronoun may travel away from its noun

Another trap appears when the event includes someone’s property. Divehi places a genitive expression before the noun it modifies in the ordinary noun-phrase ordering. In Pashto, weak possessive pronouns can occur away from their associated noun because their position depends on the sentence as a whole. A translator should not force the target possessive into the source owner-before-item arrangement merely to keep the words visually aligned.

Tegey and Robson further explain that weak pronouns serve possessive and other participant functions, with placement rules that do not identify their meaning solely through proximity. In a past report involving an owned object, there are consequently three questions: who owns the item, who acted, and what the verb agrees with. Divehi genitive marking helps with the first, but cannot answer the other two by itself. Treat the Pashto weak-pronoun construction as part of the full clause. Otherwise a translated possession can attach to the wrong participant, or a correct owner can be mistakenly promoted into the actor just because their reference appears near the beginning.
