Divehi to Malayalam: respectful we does not settle whether the listener joins the group

Respect and group membership are different information

A Divehi speaker can refer to a group while showing deference to the listener. In Malayalam, first-person plural reference also distinguishes whether the listener belongs to the group. Preserve both decisions rather than assuming that a respectful source expression automatically includes or excludes the addressee.

Gnanadesikan explains that the Divehi deferential first-person form can take the associative plural -men̊. The plural includes other people without extending the speaker’s self-lowering stance to them. She specifically notes that the person receiving the honorific can be included in that group without insult.

This source fact prevents a misleading shortcut. A deferential we is not necessarily a group excluding the respected listener. Equally, respectful wording alone does not establish that the listener participates. The source conversation must determine the membership.

For a message arranging a visit, distinguish a team explaining its own plans to a host from a group inviting the host to join the outing. Both can be courteous and both can use first-person plural reference. They create different expectations about who should travel.

The Malayalam distinction concerns inclusion of the addressee

The Malayalam Universal Dependencies documentation identifies inclusive and exclusive first-person plural pronouns. This is a distinction in participant reference. It is separate from the politeness feature that the same documentation discusses for imperative constructions.

When reviewing a translated invitation, ask whether the reader is part of the proposed group. A target that excludes the listener can make a joint plan sound like an announcement about somebody else’s party. A target that includes the listener can appear to assign participation that the source never requested.

Keep the distinction consistent as the exchange develops. The writer may first describe the visiting team, then propose an activity involving both visitors and host. The intended group can change between those sentences. Retaining one target pronoun throughout merely for consistency can conceal that change.

A useful reading check names the group in plain terms before shortening it again: the visiting team, or the visiting team together with the host. These are explanatory checks, not replacement Malayalam phrases. They make the source membership explicit enough to evaluate the target choice.

Do not expect the target verb to repeat every participant distinction

The Malayalam documentation also states that subjects and objects are not cross-referenced by verbal morphology in its account. Its number discussion likewise separates nominal number from verbal agreement. A reader cannot rely on the target verb ending to recover all the participant information carried elsewhere.

This contrasts with the Divehi grammar’s account of pronoun avoidance: a finite verb can agree with the avoided pronoun even when a different nominal expression is used. Identifying the source speaker may therefore involve evidence distributed differently from that in the target.

Read the finished arrangement by identifying who speaks, whom the message addresses and who belongs to each first-person group. Then assess courtesy independently. This preserves both the Divehi social relationship and the Malayalam inclusion distinction, without treating deference as a headcount or assuming that a familiar-looking verb form can settle who has agreed to participate.
