Divehi to Konkani: a place name can change form without changing the destination

Identify the location relationship before comparing the spelling

A Divehi direction can identify where something is, where someone is going or where something came from. Konkani can mark these relationships on a changed noun stem. A target word that differs from its dictionary form does not automatically name a different place.

Peterson and Mopkar distinguish direct and oblique noun stems in Standard Goan Konkani. Their city example has ʃar as the direct stem and ʃar-a as the oblique stem before the marker in ʃar-a=k, glossed as to the city. The extra material belongs to the construction, rather than being a second city name.

Their school example changes ʃaɭa to an oblique stem represented as ʃaɭe before the corresponding marker. Comparing it with the city example shows why a reader should not expect every noun to acquire the same visible stem extension. Substituting a destination noun may require changes inside the phrase.

For a Divehi message changing a meeting place from one venue to another, confirm the intended venue first. Then check the complete Konkani expression for the appropriate relationship. A changed noun shape can be grammatical, but a correctly formed phrase can still send the recipient to the wrong venue.

Divehi location, destination and source are distinct clues

Gnanadesikan describes Divehi -gai as a locative marker, with spoken and informal variants -ga or gā. She separately describes dative -aṣ̊ for roles including goals and beneficiaries, and ablative/instrumental -n̊ for source or means. These functions should not collapse into a general association with a place.

A location statement tells the reader where an item is. A destination statement tells the reader where an action is directed. A source statement identifies an origin. If a delivery note changes between these relationships, preserve that change even when the same building is mentioned throughout.

The dative has additional Divehi uses, including certain experiencer and ability constructions. Its presence is therefore not sufficient evidence of movement. Identify the source predicate and the participant’s role before interpreting every dative-marked expression as a destination.

The Goan Konkani study likewise separates several spatial relationships in its case overview, including in, on and source meanings. Its ten-case presentation is explicitly simplified. Use that overview to recognize distinctions, not as a guarantee that any single marker translates every occurrence of a Divehi case.

A short colloquial ending can conceal a distinction

Peterson and Mopkar note that the Standard Goan singular inessive marker =nt is often realized as =n in colloquial speech. That creates overlap with another case form in the variety they describe. A familiar-looking ending alone consequently cannot settle the spatial reading.

For a conversation about equipment, distinguish the place containing an item from the means used to perform a task. The source verb and the complete target phrase provide evidence that an isolated ending cannot supply. Do not repair a target solely by matching its last letter to an English gloss.

This guide concerns the Standard Goan variety documented in the article. Read the finished directions by locating the item, destination and origin independently, then follow the noun through its grammatical changes. This preserves the Divehi instructions while allowing Konkani stem variation to express the intended relationship instead of treating it as a change of place.
