Divehi to Georgian: from father’s hand can identify a source rather than a body part

A human source can be expressed indirectly

Gnanadesikan explains that Divehi locative and ablative/instrumental case endings do not attach directly to human nouns, names or pronouns. Instead, other words can carry the relevant relation. Her bappage atun̊ expresses from father through a phrase literally involving father’s hand; a parallel expression uses father’s side.

A Georgian translation must therefore establish whether the message identifies a source person or actually describes a hand. Preserving every source noun literally can introduce an anatomical detail that the original construction did not intend as its main point. The person supplying something should remain the source, even if Georgian expresses that relation more compactly.

Accompaniment is different from means

The Divehi grammar distinguishes its sociative with-relation from the ablative/instrumental meaning by means of. Its kokko-ā means with younger sibling. A translator should not choose a Georgian construction solely because an intermediate English gloss uses with: the source may identify a companion, a tool or another relationship.

Kobaidze and Vamling’s Georgian course gives chem-tan for with me and chem-gan for from me. These forms preserve a distinction between accompaniment and source. In a Divehi transfer message, the sibling accompanying the speaker is not automatically the person from whom the transferred item originates. Each relationship needs its own target expression.

The target pronoun can change shape

The Georgian course contrasts the independent first-person me with chem- before several postpositions. Thus a target form referring to the same speaker need not retain the standalone pronoun unchanged. The different stem does not identify a new participant; it belongs to the target construction.

Divehi also supplies case-dependent personal forms, but that familiarity cannot predict the Georgian shape. Identify the intended person and relation first, then use the Georgian expression appropriate to them. A source phrase referring to the speaker’s hand as part of a from-me construction should not be interpreted as a possessed object merely because the target also has a form associated with my.

Compactness does not prove a relationship was lost

The Georgian course describes monosyllabic postpositions written with their complements and longer postpositions written separately. It also notes that case material can reduce in joined constructions. A target expression may therefore have fewer visible words or endings than a multiword Divehi human-source phrase while still preserving the source relationship.

For a Divehi message saying who accompanied whom and from whom an object came, map those relations before comparing word boundaries. Determine whether hand or side is serving the source’s indirect case construction, whether the sociative identifies a companion, and which person each expression refers to. Then evaluate the Georgian postpositional forms. The translation should not add a body-part claim, confuse a companion with a supplier or reject a valid pronoun stem because it differs from the dictionary form. This guide follows the northern and standard Malé Divehi description and the cited course’s standard Georgian account, rather than assuming identical case categories across the pair.
