Divehi to Ganda: vowel length can preserve a word or change the time of an action

A doubled Ganda vowel is not decorative spelling

The Foreign Service Institute’s Ganda course contrasts bamala with bamaala: finishing versus smearing. Its introductory exercises use the pair to demonstrate a meaningful vowel-length distinction. A target spelling with aa cannot simply be shortened because it looks repetitive to someone expecting a different writing system.

Divehi also distinguishes long and short vowels. Gnanadesikan explains that Thaana writes vowels in every position, using different signs for long and short values, rather than an unwritten inherent vowel. A Divehi reader therefore already has a reason to treat length seriously, but the two scripts represent that information differently.

In this direction, translation changes both the vocabulary and the written mechanism. A Ganda long vowel must belong to the selected target expression; it cannot be copied from the location of a long vowel in the Divehi word. Conversely, removing doubling from a Ganda action word could replace the translated action with another one, as the course’s finishing-and-smearing contrast demonstrates.

Length can also distinguish a present report from a past one

The same Ganda course contrasts basoma with baasoma in its third-person plural reading examples. The first describes reading in the present; the second belongs to the far-past form taught there. Thus length can distinguish grammatical forms of the same verb as well as different lexical meanings.

For a Divehi message about people reading a document, preserving the people and the reading action is not enough if the target shifts its time reference. A present update and a recollection of an earlier event have different uses. The Ganda example places that contrast in the first vowel, so the crucial information can be easy to overlook in a visual comparison.

Divehi itself shows that length does not have one universal grammatical meaning. Gnanadesikan contrasts mamma as a mother reference with mammā in direct address. That source distinction concerns how the relative is addressed, not a present-versus-past opposition. Do not infer a Ganda tense from lengthening somewhere in the Divehi source.

Pronunciation marks and ordinary spelling need separate interpretation

The FSI program distinguishes written tone marks used for teaching from the representation of vowel and consonant length. Its tone-focused design is a reminder that not every mark in a pronunciation exercise belongs to ordinary target spelling. A line of pedagogical notation should not be pasted as though all its symbols were letters.

Gnanadesikan likewise distinguishes scholarly Divehi Romanization from official Romanization: scholarly macrons identify long vowels, while official conventions can use English-like vowel combinations. Moving between a source reading aid and Ganda spelling therefore requires knowing which notation is being read.

The practical comparison is the intended word and construction: finishing versus smearing, present reading versus earlier reading, or naming a relative versus addressing them. Each contrast must be recognized within its own language. Superficially similar vowel lengthening across the two writing systems does not give it the same grammatical function.
