Divehi to Galician: a regular activity is different from a completed result

Recognize a pattern across occasions

A Divehi description can report what someone regularly does rather than what they are doing at this moment. A Galician translation needs to preserve that distinction, especially when an auxiliary construction might otherwise look like a report of one finished event.

Gnanadesikan explains that the Divehi durative existential uḷenī combined with a converb can explicitly express habitual activity. Her examples include using a language generally and experiencing difficulties regularly. These descriptions concern a pattern across occasions, rather than only the moment at which the message is sent.

For a description of someone’s working routine, first establish whether the source reports normal practice or a particular occurrence. A statement that a colleague regularly communicates in a language does not establish that the colleague is speaking it right now. Conversely, an observation of one conversation does not demonstrate a lasting routine.

The grammar also gives a past example corresponding to used to travel. The historical time frame and the habitual interpretation contribute separate information. A target that merely reports one past journey can lose the source’s pattern, even if it keeps travel vocabulary and an appropriate past form.

Galician ter with a participle needs its complete construction

The Real Academia Galega dictionary describes ter plus participle as expressing a habitual or repeated action. Its explanation therefore warns against treating this construction as a general equivalent of every English-looking have-done expression or every Divehi perfect.

The entry then distinguishes a construction in which the participle agrees with the direct object. Its example Ten feitos uns doces para a sobremesa concerns sweets prepared for dessert. The dictionary treats that differently from the repeated-action verbal construction. Agreement contributes evidence about which construction is present.

For a Divehi update about work, distinguish tasks repeatedly carried out from items now ready. Repeated preparation and a prepared batch can both be relevant, but neither assertion automatically includes the other. A message about an established routine should not become confirmation that a particular order is finished.

Equally, a source confirming a completed batch should not be weakened into a statement that the worker has often done similar work. The recipient may need the completed items now. Familiar auxiliary vocabulary cannot settle that practical question without the rest of the phrase.

A present form does not force a present-moment reading

Gnanadesikan notes that unmarked Divehi verbs can receive habitual interpretations in many contexts, while the auxiliary makes that interpretation explicit. A translator should consequently read the context even when the more explicit habitual construction is absent.

In an exchange about recurring difficulties, ask whether the speaker describes a repeated problem or a difficulty on this occasion. Preserve any source expressions establishing regularity. Do not infer repetition merely because the same problem was mentioned earlier in the conversation; a continuing discussion can concern one occurrence.

Finally, compare the source and target as answers to different questions: what is normally done, what used to happen and what result is available now? The Galician wording should answer the same question as the Divehi account. This keeps a routine from turning into a completion claim and keeps an actual completed result from disappearing into a general statement of experience.
