Divehi to Canadian French: keeping the right person attached to a linked activity

Linked events do not automatically have the same actor

A Divehi account can link an earlier activity with a later event. In Canadian French, shortening that account with a participial expression can make the reader assign both activities to the same person. Confirm the participants before deciding that the shorter target sentence preserves the source.

Gnanadesikan describes Divehi successive particles -fai and -gen̊ attached to converbs. Her practical guideline associates -fai with the same subject as the inflected verb, while -gen̊ need not have that same subject. She explicitly presents this as a rule of thumb, with subtler usage discussed elsewhere, rather than a complete mechanical test.

The source distinction is useful in a handover report. Someone may prepare an item and then deliver it personally, or one person may prepare it before another delivers it. Both descriptions contain preparation followed by delivery, but they allocate responsibility differently.

Also retain the sequence. The grammar describes these successive constructions as placing the converb’s event before the main event. A target wording suggesting that preparation and delivery occurred simultaneously could change the account even if the participants remain correct.

An unexpressed French subject usually follows the main clause

The OQLF advises that a present participle or gérondif with an understood subject should generally refer to the subject of the clause containing it. The guidance prioritizes clarity, particularly when a different interpretation would be possible. This gives a concrete check for a compact Canadian French translation.

Its house-sale example names Carl and Mathieu as the people selling their house before another person makes an offer. The advisory contrasts that with a shortened construction that incorrectly attaches selling to the person making the offer. The topic of the transaction stays familiar while the grammatical attachment changes who does what.

For a Divehi handover message, apply the same reading check to the target: who is understood to prepare the item, and who performs the later action? A reader should not have to override the sentence’s ordinary attachment simply because the wider situation makes another actor seem more plausible.

If the source establishes different participants, retain enough target wording to identify them. A full clause or an explicitly named participant can be more useful than a shorter phrase that redirects the earlier activity to the main subject.

Clarity matters more than matching one short form to another

The OQLF acknowledges exceptions in literary writing and in some passive, impersonal or broadly interpreted constructions. Its recommendation is therefore not a claim that every occurrence with a different understood subject is impossible. For administrative correspondence, however, it recommends following the ordinary rule closely.

That scope suits a practical translation of a work update, application or handover note. Preserve the actors and timing before polishing the sentence. A Divehi converb is not automatically a French gérondif, and a familiar-looking short target form is not evidence that both languages distribute participant reference identically.

Read the completed message as an account of responsibilities: who performed the earlier activity, who carried out the later event and in what order. Then compare those answers with the source. This catches a change that spelling checks cannot detect: a fluent Canadian French sentence that quietly credits the wrong person with part of the work.
